New Ulm Library Staff Trained on Homeless Services to Better Assist Patrons
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent New Ulm Library Board meeting, the most development discussed was the comprehensive staff training focused on improving services for patrons, particularly concerning resources for the homeless. This initiative, part of a full-day training event, included presentations by local experts such as Police Chief Dave Borurt and Brown County Human Services staff. The training equipped library staff with a deeper understanding of available resources and how to connect patrons effectively.
Another noteworthy point was the financial report, which revealed that the library’s budget is closely aligned with 2025 expectations. Some discrepancies were noted between budgeted and actual expenditures, but these were due to re-categorization of expenses as advised by the city’s auditor. The library’s subscriptions and memberships line is expected to be overspent, while the computer supplies and equipment line will be underspent, balancing the overall financial picture.
The board also discussed staffing changes, welcoming two new library pages and a maintenance technician, with recruitment for an open library aid position ongoing. The Friends of the Library book sale was a success, nearly doubling the library’s door counts for the event days. The board expressed gratitude for the volunteers’ contributions, particularly the efforts of Friends President A.J. Tauer.
Upcoming programming drew attention as well, with events such as a forensic psychology session by Frank Weber and a historical crime presentation by Carla Feld, offering diverse educational opportunities for community members. The library will also host a series of youth-oriented activities, maintaining its engagement with younger patrons.
