Greater Egg Harbor School Board Showcases Student-Led Road Safety Initiatives and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The Greater Egg Harbor School Board meeting primarily focused on the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance community safety and student engagement. Key discussions included student-led road safety campaigns, collaborations with local police, and upcoming school events. Attendees were informed of initiatives aimed at mitigating speeding, distracted driving, and the unique projects students are undertaking to create a safer and more involved community.
One item at the meeting was a presentation detailing the collaborative efforts between Oakrest High School and local stakeholders to combat distracted driving. Oakrest principal Mike Manny, alongside Kevin Costello, shared insights into the “Press Safe Coalition,” an initiative focused on raising awareness of road safety through community engagement. The coalition has worked with local hospitals, police departments, and various organizations to address issues such as distracted driving and pedestrian safety. Costello noted that over 2,700 accidents have occurred in recent years in the area, a substantial portion of which were linked to distracted driving. To tackle this, the coalition is developing public service announcements and new initiatives, with hopes of expanding these efforts as a pilot project within the school district.
The coalition’s work includes practical measures like installing enhanced visibility features on roadways and initiating educational trips to organizations discussing road safety topics. Costello highlighted a collaboration with Joel Felman, who brings personal motivation to the cause, as his organization seeks to promote awareness following a personal tragedy. The coalition aims to utilize these partnerships to create impactful safety campaigns that engage both students and the broader community.
In a related effort, students are collaborating with the Hamilton County Police to address speeding issues at key intersections, particularly during high-traffic periods like soccer season. Abigail, a student involved in the campaign, suggested the slogan “score goals not speeding tickets” to be used on electronic signage. This initiative not only educates the public on traffic safety but also empowers students to take an active role in improving their community.
The meeting also covered various student achievements and upcoming events. Benny from Cedar Creek reported that the football team and girls’ tennis had both qualified for state championships. Cedar Creek also hosted a Veterans Day event, inviting local veterans to share their experiences with students.
In addition, the board discussed a planned online forum for parents on November 20th and December 10th, focusing on educating them about the regulations and safety measures concerning electric bikes and scooters. Recognizing a potential gap in understanding between parents and teenagers, the board aims to ensure that families are well-informed about the legalities and safe practices associated with these vehicles.
The meeting included updates on school activities, such as the successful Great Gatsby-themed homecoming at Asagami and the smooth administration of state-mandated testing. Caitlyn, representing Oak, shared insights from a recent sports field trip and a food drive organized by the National Honor Society, highlighting the students’ engagement and community service efforts. She also described an innovative project from her biomedical innovation class, where students designed prosthetic arms using simple materials.
Upcoming events were also highlighted, including performances of “Charlotte’s Web” and Cedar Creek football’s participation in the state group three semifinals. The board expressed gratitude to local fire and police departments for their support during school events and acknowledged the community’s role in fostering a supportive environment for student activities.
