Wildwood Crest Borough Secures $3 Million Grant for Park Boulevard
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent meeting of the Wildwood Crest Borough Council, a major announcement was made regarding a grant application for Park Boulevard, which has been accepted and ranked. The project stands to receive up to $3 million in principal forgiveness, easing the financial burden on the municipality. This development marks a substantial step forward for the community’s infrastructure improvements. The council’s engineer provided a detailed overview, revealing that the project’s total projected cost is approximately $6 million. To capitalize on the grant, the council must expedite the design phase and move to bid by June 30, 2026. The engineer suggested the possibility of completing the project in phases, which could allow the municipality to undertake a $3 million segment without any cost to taxpayers, a strategic approach that could optimize the use of available funds.
In other matters, the council addressed various ordinances, starting with the amendment of the fire prevention code, specifically regarding smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Ordinance number 1470 was passed on its first reading with unanimous support. Following this, ordinance number 1471, which adjusts the fees associated with beach box rentals, was also unanimously approved on its first reading. The council passed ordinance number 1472, concerning the Recreation Commission’s rates and fees for facility rentals and participation in events and activities.
Significant discussions ensued around resolutions, particularly regarding the procurement of equipment for public works. A notable point of discussion was the purchase of a Ford F450 pickup truck, equipped with a dump truck back, as opposed to a standard pickup. This resolution, alongside the authorization of expenditures for a valve maintenance skid and trailer, passed unanimously. The council also approved resolutions related to the release of escrow and performance bond funds, the cancellation of bond ordinance improvement authorization balances, and the establishment of salary amendments for 2025 stipend agreements, all with unanimous consent.
Public safety was a key focus, with Chief Voy presenting a report. The department handled 1,259 calls for service in October, with 361 requiring multiple officers and 125 motor vehicle stops resulting in 26 summonses. The report included two adult arrests and numerous administrative calls and property checks.
The meeting also covered updates on ongoing infrastructure projects. The engineer’s report highlighted progress on the Bayside bulkhead replacement project, with approximately 50% of storm outfall valves installed. The New Jersey Ibank Sanitary Sewer and Roadway improvement project was progressing, with increased contractor activity noted. Furthermore, a grant of $1,116,187 for the reconstruction of Denver Avenue was announced, a development that was well-received by the council.
Correspondence during the meeting included congratulations to Matt Tommen for his induction into the Alcarino Basketball Club of South Jersey Hall of Fame. Community initiatives were discussed, including plans for introducing a box truck ordinance in January 2026, the ongoing search for volunteers for the 250th birthday committee, and the holding of the Crest Municipal app as a budgetary item for 2026. There are also plans to further develop the historical museum in the coming year.
Traffic calming initiatives remain pending, awaiting updates from grant applications. Public works plans to install snow fencing and elevation improvements along the back beaches to address low-lying areas. Feedback on the dredging project is expected in December, and infrastructure work on New Jersey Avenue is anticipated to commence soon. The council is also awaiting updates on a potential $27 million grant related to Washington C viewfalls.
The Army Corps of Engineers has redirected funding for a previously discussed project, leading to potential litigation between North Wildwood and the state, creating uncertainty regarding the implications for Wildwood Crest. Draft renovation plans for Borough Hall are available for review, with feedback expected by the new year.
During public comments, resident Dave McWills sought clarification on the scope of the back bays project and recent fee increases for beach boxes. The project extends south of previous work to Topeka Avenue, and the beach box rental fee increase from $480 to $505, plus a credit card fee, was noted. McWills raised concerns about buried outfall pipes and the timelines for the Park Boulevard and Jersey Avenue projects, commending the borough’s management despite potential disruptions.
