Cinnaminson School Board Faces Backlash Over Nursing Contract Termination
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Cinnaminson School Board meeting, the decision to terminate the district’s contract with Care Options for Kids, a nursing agency supporting a medically fragile student, dominated discussions. This decision, which was communicated solely through the agency, sparked significant concern from Danielle Freeze, the mother of the student, Oscar. She highlighted the abrupt nature of the termination, noting that the contract had been approved for the entire 2025-2026 school year. Freeze questioned whether financial motives were behind the decision, asking, “If that’s the case, we ask what amount of savings justifies putting our medically fragile child at risk?”
Freeze emphasized the critical nature of her son’s health condition, which includes a complex congenital heart condition that necessitates close monitoring and support from nurses familiar with his needs. The nurses had developed a rapport with Oscar, understanding his baseline health and dietary requirements, which Freeze argued was important for his well-being. The termination of the contract without prior consultation with affected families or medical professionals was a concern for Freeze, who urged the board to consult certified school nurses to gain a clearer understanding of the situation.
The meeting also included comments from Mr. O’Donnell, who spoke on behalf of his grandson Oscar. He stressed the vital role that school nurses play in managing his grandson’s health, stating, “I don’t know how this school district can take the responsibility for a fragile child and expect someone that does not know him… to take the risk of him having a heart issue while he’s in school.” Mr. O’Donnell’s comments highlighted the potential risks associated with shifting responsibilities away from trained nurses, particularly for students with special medical needs.
Aside from the contentious nursing contract issue, the board meeting addressed other agenda items, including personnel recommendations and curriculum matters. Personnel matters, presented by Miss Donaldson, included various appointments, resignations, leaves of absence, and substitute teachers. These were approved quickly and without objection. Similarly, Mr. Sheeran presented recommendations related to curriculum and instruction, such as professional development and field trips, which were also approved without debate.
During the public comment period, a teacher praised the board and staff for their dedication to supporting students, particularly highlighting the growth of the special education program. The teacher shared a personal connection, noting that their son, diagnosed with high-functioning autism, had greatly benefited from the district’s study skills program. This program was credited with enhancing the child’s confidence and success in school.
The meeting also addressed issues related to business and finance. Miss Anderson presented recommendations concerning grants, finance, operations, and contracts, which were approved without objection. Miss Patel moved to approve other business matters, which also proceeded smoothly.
Retiring board members were recognized for their years of service, and the importance of civics education was highlighted, particularly in providing authentic learning experiences for students.
Insights gained from the recent New Jersey School Board Association convention were shared, with board members discussing sessions focused on communication and family engagement. Suggestions for enhancing communication included adding a multilingual chatbot to the district’s website and conducting surveys to gauge public preferences for communication methods.
