Westfield School Board Announces School Renovation Plans and Celebrates Superintendent’s Statewide Recognition
- Meeting Overview:
The Westfield School Board meeting on November 18, 2025, was marked by the unveiling of extensive renovation plans for district schools and the celebration of Superintendent Dr. Raymond González, who was named the 2026 New Jersey Superintendent of the Year.
The board’s primary focus was the ambitious construction and renovation projects planned across several schools, with completion expected by 2028. Representatives from FKA Architects detailed comprehensive plans for each school, emphasizing the objective to improve learning environments while addressing community feedback. The project entails additions and renovations at Franklin, Jefferson, McKinley, Tamakquis, Washington, Wilson, Edison Intermediate, Roosevelt, and Westfield High School.
Franklin School will feature a new drive loop and pedestrian pathways, a permanent entry portico, ADA-compliant ramps, and several new classrooms to accommodate full-day kindergarten. Jefferson School’s expansion includes a multi-purpose room functioning as an elementary gym and five new classrooms, anticipating future enrollment increases. McKinley School’s three-story addition will enhance security with a relocated main office and provide new instructional and administrative spaces.
Tamakquis Elementary will see a strategic design to integrate with existing topography, adding kindergarten classrooms and specialized instruction spaces. Washington School’s plan includes a revamped playground area and numerous new classrooms and special education spaces, reflecting community input. Wilson Elementary’s renovation focuses on flexible learning areas and improved facilities.
Edison and Roosevelt Schools’ enhancements mirror each other, with locker room additions, ADA-compliant facilities, and updated media centers. Westfield High School’s renovations will improve accessibility and accommodate special education needs, with added instructional spaces.
The timeline anticipates bidding by 2026 and construction from fall 2026 to 2028.
Simultaneously, the board celebrated Dr. González’s recognition as the 2026 New Jersey Superintendent of the Year. This accolade, presented by representatives from the New Jersey Association of School Administrators, commended his leadership and the trust he has cultivated within the community. Dr. González expressed gratitude for the board’s support.
In addition to infrastructural and leadership highlights, the board recognized student achievements and community involvement. The Westfield High School Wind Ensemble’s invitation to the 2026 New Jersey Music Educators Association State Conference was noted, alongside the recognition of 25 student athletes signing national letters of intent. The Derek Nelson Lift While You Climb Award was presented to 11 students for their exemplary character.
The student representative report included a summary of high school activities, from a successful homecoming dance to the robotics club’s victory and fundraising efforts supporting breast cancer awareness and cancer patients. These initiatives reflect the district’s emphasis on community service and student engagement.
Public comments were dominated by student concerns over a new policy restricting senior students from leaving campus during flex periods. Students advocated for reconsideration, citing the need for independence and the mental health benefits of adequate break time.
The Curriculum, Instruction, and Programs committee emphasized the K-2 science and technology curriculum, while the Finance and Facilities committee addressed ongoing soil issues at specific schools, highlighting a decrease in health benefits costs but a projected increase in overall expenses. The Policy, Personnel, and Governance committee discussed updates to stipend job descriptions and the development of board goals.
