Sunny Isles Beach City Commission Focuses on Traffic Calming and Utility Compliance
- Meeting Overview:
The Sunny Isles Beach City Commission meeting on November 20th centered around topics, including the introduction of traffic calming measures and updates on the Golden Shores undergrounding project. The session also celebrated local creativity through a photo contest and a student essay competition.
The discussion on traffic calming strategies took precedence during the meeting. Commissioners deliberated on maintaining a 20 mph speed limit on internal streets, with a consultant named Calran contracted to conduct traffic studies and propose civil works for traffic improvements. Strategies under consideration included implementing speed humps and narrowing intersections to improve safety.
An important aspect of the discussion involved integrating bike lanes into future traffic plans to enhance safety for both cyclists and scooter users. A preliminary design proposed a two-way bike lane, though its implementation would entail significant road work and the removal of trees. Commissioners were keen on presenting these plans by January, while also considering options to improve visibility for bike lanes, particularly on busy roads like Collins Avenue. However, state regulations on lane markings posed challenges to the feasibility of these changes.
While traffic and safety improvements dominated the commission’s agenda, the Golden Shores undergrounding project was another issue. The city manager provided updates regarding coordination with utility companies, specifically highlighting AT&T’s separate handling of its fiber installation. It was noted that 46 homes still required permits for the project to proceed, raising concerns about compliance and potential delays. Although no cost increases had yet occurred due to delays, the future remained uncertain.
The commission also tackled the growing concern over e-scooters and e-bikes on sidewalks. A public sentiment survey had been conducted, with results anticipated at the January meeting. The commission aimed to align its policies with neighboring municipalities while maintaining enforcement efforts.
In addition to these matters, the meeting celebrated local talent through the announcement of winners in a photo contest for the 2026 desktop calendar. Moses Ban’s aerial view of Sunny Isles Beach earned the cover photo award, with additional photographers recognized for their contributions. Alvivera Gatina and Vanessa Vieiraa were acknowledged for their roles in designing and managing the contest, respectively.
Furthermore, the commission recognized the winners of the Florida City Week writing contest, which encouraged sixth through eighth graders to express what makes their city special. The essays highlighted themes of safety, community pride, and multiculturalism. The Vice Mayor read a statement commending the students’ contributions and underlined the importance of their reflections in fostering community strength.
The meeting also addressed concerns regarding rising water service fees from North Miami Beach. A request was made for a comparison of per-gallon rates charged to Sunny Isles Beach against those charged to other cities. The desire for transparency in the billing process was emphasized, with a request for a detailed breakdown of rates.
Lastly, the commission received a brief legislative update, noting that the upcoming session would see various bills, particularly concerning property taxes. While some proposals could negatively impact municipalities, others aimed to provide tax breaks for senior homeowners. The discussion included the challenges smaller municipalities face due to proposed increases in government liability limits, highlighting the need for careful consideration of such laws to ensure fair treatment across different city sizes and budgets.
