Kearny School Board Tackles Chronic Absenteeism with New Action Plans Across District
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Kearny School Board meeting centered around addressing chronic absenteeism, with detailed action plans presented by various schools. The board also reviewed a substantial $200,000 literacy grant, an impressive audit report, and new policies affecting employees.
A major focus of the meeting was the escalating issue of chronic absenteeism across Kearny’s schools. The board discussed comprehensive action plans aimed at reducing absentee rates, with each school detailing its specific initiatives. The concern over absenteeism stems from its documented negative impact on both academic performance and emotional well-being. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of school days, and the district has been striving to curb this trend through targeted efforts.
Garfield School reported a significant absenteeism rate in kindergarten, reaching 28%, and highlighted their strategy of employing school attendance teams and offering incentives such as perfect attendance awards. Despite a low survey response rate, awareness among parents about absenteeism has improved, with 76% now understanding its implications. Roosevelt School, which has seen a reduction in absenteeism, attributes common absences to illness and travel. Their strategies include in-person meetings with parents of frequently absent students and expanding communication efforts through phone calls and letters.
Skyler School showed promising improvements. Their focus includes monthly attendance contests and direct outreach to students missing consecutive days. Washington School noted a decrease in absenteeism but acknowledged that 66.2% of parents still need education on the matter. Their approach involves family engagement workshops and mentorship programs.
Lincoln Middle School expressed hope in leaving its absenteeism designation, noting higher eighth-grade absenteeism rates. They focus on engaging students through extracurricular activities to encourage attendance. The high school reported that senior students had the highest absenteeism rate at 25.54%. Illness remained a prevalent factor, and they faced challenges like low survey responses. The high school’s plan involves expanding incentives and improving communication with at-risk groups.
Following the absenteeism presentations, other topics included the announcement of a $200,000 impact grant for literacy enhancement. This grant, authored by Karen Pichin and Mercedes Alves, aims to improve literacy instruction and professional development by providing high-quality instructional materials and supporting preschool family engagement.
The board also reviewed the district’s financial health during the audit for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. The auditor reported a positive financial status, with the general fund showing over $43 million in cash and equivalents. Moreover, the district earned an unexpected $7 million in interest income. The audit found no recommendations for improvement.
A new policy mandating direct deposit for new employees starting in January 2026 was introduced, although it will not affect current staff. In the realm of community engagement, a donation from ShopRite was acknowledged, which will fund an Ice Cream Social at Washington Elementary School for the student of the month.
The meeting also highlighted the achievements of student athletes in various sports, recognizing six individuals for their performance. Additionally, an upcoming “Day of Computing” at Montclair State University was announced, targeting underserved elementary students for hands-on computing activities.
