Woodcliff Lake Council Honors Fire Department, Discusses Extensive Community Projects
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Woodcliff Lake Borough Council recognized the exceptional efforts of the local fire department in response to a severe bus accident and addressed numerous community projects and concerns, including tennis court redevelopment, transit improvements, and a new “film ready” resolution to attract film projects to the town.
The meeting opened with an emotional acknowledgment of the Woodcliff Lake Fire Department’s response to a bus accident on March 10, 2025. A proclamation was read, commending the bravery and rapid response of the firefighters, who extricated a child trapped under the bus and administered CPR within nine minutes of arrival. The fire department’s decisive actions underscored the volunteers’ dedication and professionalism, drawing gratitude from the council and the community. The council members expressed deep appreciation for the firefighters’ sacrifices and commitment, emphasizing the invaluable role they play in ensuring the community’s safety.
Following the commendation, the council addressed several forward-looking community initiatives. One major discussion centered around the redevelopment of tennis courts, with the council considering a $400,000 matching grant application from the Open Space Trust Fund. This redevelopment project aims to enhance recreational facilities, although council members expressed differing views on the current demand for tennis courts.
The state of local railroad tracks was another concern, with frustrations voiced over delayed repairs by New Jersey Transit. While assurances were received from transit representatives that repairs would be prioritized, previous communications had been unproductive. This ongoing issue reflects the broader challenge of addressing infrastructure needs within the town.
Flyers from the state film commission will be distributed to involve residents in suggesting filming sites, fostering community participation in this new venture.
The council meeting also covered the management of ash trees on private properties, emphasizing the importance of official communication to homeowners about necessary actions due to potential issues with these trees.
The council also approved the disposition of obsolete borough vehicles, including a Hummer, as part of efforts to optimize municipal resources.
Ordinance 254, which restricts borough parking lots to local residents, addressed concerns about parking availability during the COVID-19 pandemic when lots were opened to non-residents. The ordinance ensures that parking privileges are reserved for residents, while honoring permits already purchased.
Community engagement was further encouraged with announcements of upcoming events, including Arbor Day celebrations, a community cleanup, and a Springfest at the new park. These initiatives aim to foster community spirit and environmental awareness while providing opportunities for residents to engage in local activities.
