Lacey Town Council Celebrates Police Promotions and Addresses Dementia Awareness
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Lacey Town Council meeting highlighted the promotion of Paul J. Sullivan Jr. to chief of police and Samuel C. Delisalo to police captain, as well as the community’s initiative to raise dementia awareness. The session underscored the importance of community engagement and honored the dedication of the police force.
The promotion of Paul J. Sullivan Jr. to chief of police was a focal point of the meeting. The council unanimously approved the resolution to promote Sullivan, who has been with the Lacey Police Department since August 2001. Sullivan’s career progression includes roles as acting sergeant, permanent sergeant, firearms instructor, field training officer, and patrol lieutenant, culminating in his promotion to police captain in November 2022. After taking the oath of office, Sullivan expressed gratitude for the support from the township committee and acknowledged the sacrifices made by police officers and their families, emphasizing the importance of relationships within the department.
Retiring Chief Christopher Kenny shared reflections on his career, expressing gratitude toward his colleagues and the community. After over 25 years of service, Kenny plans to retire on December 1st, leaving a legacy of camaraderie and dedication. He assured attendees that the department is in capable hands with Sullivan at the helm, highlighting Sullivan’s extensive experience and education. Kenny’s speech was filled with appreciation for the support he received throughout his career, and he emphasized the significant role that the department plays in the community.
The meeting also celebrated the promotion of Samuel C. Delisalo to the rank of captain. Acknowledged for his military service in the United States Marine Corps and his tenure with the Lacey Police Department starting in 2005, Delisalo’s career includes roles on the Ocean County Regional SWAT team and as a detective. His commendations and extensive training in various specialized fields further illustrate his capability to serve in his new role. Delisalo expressed gratitude to the township committee, his family, and the department.
Beyond police matters, the meeting addressed the issue of dementia awareness, brought forward by a resident who shared personal experiences with caring for a family member affected by the condition. The resident urged for increased awareness and community engagement regarding dementia, noting the lack of fundraising efforts in the township for this cause. A meeting is scheduled at Murray Grove to gather community members affected by dementia and support the women’s Alzheimer’s movement. The resident expressed hope in securing a high-profile guest to draw attention to the cause and proposed speaking at local schools to educate younger generations about dementia.
The council recognized the relevance of dementia awareness, especially given the aging population in the area, and expressed support for the resident’s initiative. A council member suggested connecting the resident with community resources to enhance outreach efforts.
Public comments during the meeting included concerns about council transparency and accountability, with residents advocating for improved communication and engagement with constituents. Some residents expressed dissatisfaction with how public comments were handled, highlighting perceived biases against dissenting opinions. Suggestions were made to preserve historical sites and involve students in community projects to foster a deeper connection to the town’s history.
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude for the police force, acknowledgments of military service, and a focus on community values. The council also approved routine agenda items, such as extending storage container allowances for a resident and authorizing permits for upcoming events.
