Beach Haven Borough Sees Significant Drop in Juvenile Incidents Following Policy Changes
- Meeting Overview:
The Beach Haven Borough Council meeting on November 25th focused on a notable decrease in juvenile-related incidents over the past year. This improvement was attributed to increased enforcement of curfew violations and the absence of the popular but problematic teen night.
The Beach Haven Police Department provided detailed statistics to the council showing a 54% reduction in curfew warnings, dropping from 20,000 in 2024 to 9,000 in 2025. Property damage and vandalism attributed to juveniles also saw a significant decrease of 65%, with incidents falling from 26 to 9. Arrests related to juveniles decreased by 29%, from 31 in 2024 to 22 in 2025. The police credited proactive measures, including doubling the number of curfew tickets issued, as a key factor in these improvements.
The council discussed the potential for maintaining or adjusting these strategies in the coming year. The police recommended continuing the current approach, which includes not reinstating teen night and maintaining the current level of curfew enforcement, to ensure continued success.
In addition to these developments, the council addressed several resolutions within a consent agenda. These included authorizing the sale of surplus property via an online auction, budget transfers, and a shared agreement with Ocean County for schedule C services. They also acknowledged the promotion of Robin Young to construction official. No items were removed for separate discussion.
During the public comment session, a resident praised the council and borough employees for the improved conditions in the town, attributing the success to their leadership and efforts. The resident expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing Jake’s Playground project and suggested potential future recreational developments, such as a running track at Walshfield.
