Revere License Commission Confronts Noise Complaints and Disturbances at Lupita’s Nightclub
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Revere License Commission, attention was focused on the ongoing noise complaints and disturbances attributed to Lupita’s nightclub. Residents voiced concerns about the intolerable noise levels, crowd behavior, and parking issues that have disrupted the peace in their residential area. The commission considered various solutions, including adjusting operating hours and increasing security measures, in an effort to address the community’s grievances while balancing the interests of local businesses.
The meeting was dominated by discussions about the operational impact of Lupita’s nightclub on the surrounding neighborhood. Residents described the situation as unbearable, with loud music, disruptive behavior, and noise persisting until the early hours of the morning. One resident shared a particularly distressing experience, noting that the noise was so pervasive it felt like a “live concert” inside his home. He reported that crowds often lingered outside the nightclub after closing, shouting and causing disturbances, which resulted in multiple police vehicles being dispatched to the location.
Further testimony from another resident, Samira Buzzagu, highlighted the personal toll these disturbances have taken on her family. She recounted their decision to move from their apartment due to the noise and chaos, which exacerbated her husband’s health issues. Buzzagu emphasized the negative impact on the community, with patrons fighting and using offensive language outside the nightclub, creating an unsuitable environment for families.
Residents expressed frustration over the lack of improvement despite previous attempts to address these issues. They criticized the nightclub’s classification as a restaurant, arguing it functioned more like a nightclub, which was incompatible with the family-oriented nature of the neighborhood. They called for a reevaluation of Lupita’s operations.
The commission members acknowledged the challenges presented by Lupita’s location in a densely populated residential area, particularly given its proximity to other nightlife venues. A police lieutenant present at the meeting highlighted the existing efforts to manage crowds, noting that while the detail officer and in-house security team were praised for maintaining order inside, controlling patrons once they exited remained problematic. The lieutenant emphasized that the noise issue stemmed from the large numbers of patrons leaving the venue at closing time.
The commission considered various solutions to mitigate the disturbances. Suggestions included rolling back the nightclub’s operating hours to 1:00 a.m. or reducing the DJ’s performance time. Some members proposed a trial period for these changes to assess their impact on the noise levels and community satisfaction. There was also a discussion about potentially amending the entertainment license to curtail the nightclub’s live music offerings.
Supporters of the nightclub argued against penalizing one business for broader issues affecting the area. They pointed out that the presence of multiple bars contributed to the noise and disturbances, and suggested a more holistic approach to addressing the problem. One suggestion was to stagger the exit of patrons to reduce congestion and noise outside the venue.
The commission ultimately decided to trial a rollback of Lupita’s operating hours and to explore increased security measures. A motion was made to reduce the hours for a 30-day period, allowing for a future evaluation of the situation. The commission also stressed the importance of including other local businesses in discussions about communal security efforts.
In addition to the focus on Lupita’s nightclub, the meeting addressed other routine business, including the approval of license transfers and changes in management for several establishments. Notably, Mission Hill Donuts LLC secured a transfer of a common victual’s license, and Triangle Pro, Inc. received approval for a change of manager. The commission also discussed operational hours for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations, maintaining the established closing times to ensure consistency and safety.
