Concerns Over Uniform Policies and School Conditions Dominate Camden School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Camden School Board meeting, student representatives voiced concerns about the district’s uniform policy and school conditions, focusing on issues such as inadequate bathroom supplies and the quality of school meals.
The meeting commenced with student representatives from various schools sharing their experiences and challenges. Sai Hicks, a new student representative from Camden High School, highlighted the stress caused by the khaki pants requirement in the school uniform policy. Hicks emphasized that the light color of these pants makes stains more visible, which is an issue for students who menstruate and cannot frequently wash their clothes. Hicks stated, “Students are sharing that they are missing school because they’re unable to wash their visible dirty clothes.” This concern was coupled with the lack of menstrual hygiene products and soap in school bathrooms, prompting Hicks to question the board on potential solutions.
Adriana from Brim Middle School echoed concerns about scheduling conflicts, which affect student participation in school events, and raised issues regarding gym class logistics. She defended the effectiveness of Coach Weismer on the wrestling team, noting his role in increasing team participation. Meanwhile, Jaden from Creative Arts expressed frustrations with lunch logistics and safety concerns during transitions, mentioning that students from other schools often intrude, causing congestion. Jaden also pointed out disparities in funding for various programs, specifically the lack of resources for dance classes compared to others.
The quality of school meals was a recurring topic, with Hicks and other students expressing dissatisfaction with the availability and quality of food during the last lunch period, particularly when popular items like wings or pizza were served. Hicks noted the need for a reevaluation of lunch timings to ensure equitable food access, stating, “I grabbed like two apples, two apple sauces… and they tasted like fish.” The board acknowledged these concerns and committed to addressing them, emphasizing the importance of ensuring sufficient food quantities for all lunch periods.
The meeting also delved into the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, which are designed to align with local workforce needs. The board discussed the structured pathways of these programs, which begin with career awareness in elementary grades and culminate in high school training that equips students with industry-recognized certifications. These programs, presented as viable pathways for all students, boast a 95% graduation rate among participants, attributed to the mentorship provided throughout the program.
In addition to the discussions on student concerns, the board recognized the achievements of exemplary educators and announced the district’s receipt of the Colon Kaepernick STEM grant for Cooper’s Point. The board also acknowledged long-serving staff members who are retiring, celebrating their contributions to the district.
Public comments highlighted ongoing issues at East Side High School, with speakers emphasizing the need for improved facilities and resources. Concerns about cleanliness were raised, with Rochelle Doners, head custodian at Yorkship School, advocating for better support and resources for custodial staff. These comments were echoed by Sal Roman, president of CWA Local 1040, who criticized the lack of accountability from the administration.
The superintendent addressed these concerns, explaining the district’s financial challenges, including a $91 million deficit and the impact of student transfers to charter schools on funding. She assured attendees that efforts are underway to address the issues raised, emphasizing the need for transparency and communication with the public.
