Acushnet Board Approves Police Toy Drive, Considers Building Department Changes
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Acushnet Board of Selectmen meeting, the board approved the use of the town hall parking lot for a police-organized toy drive and discussed changes to the building department, including a candidate for a local inspector position and potential fee adjustments.
The meeting’s most notable decision was the unanimous approval of a police toy drive to be held on December 13th, organized by Sergeant Fonts and colleagues. This annual event, now in its fifteenth year, partners with Safe Zones, a New Bedford nonprofit, to provide support to local children during the holiday season. Sergeant Fonts shared that the event would include activities such as providing hot chocolate and pizza, with an officer dressing as Santa Claus. The board expressed unanimous support after discussing the importance of the event, especially its focus on collecting new, unwrapped toys and gifts for teens, who are often overlooked in such drives.
Another topic was the discussion around the building department, particularly the consideration of Mike Redlon for a local inspector role. Redlon presented his qualifications, highlighting his extensive background in excavation, real estate, and construction. He has been involved in building projects since 2015 and is currently constructing three Accessory Dwelling Units and one new home. The board noted Redlon’s efforts towards obtaining the necessary certifications to become a building commissioner, with his first of five required exams scheduled for December 19. The board expressed interest in appointing him as a local inspector to allow him to gain practical experience while continuing his certification process. The board’s intent is to strengthen the building department’s team.
Additionally, the board discussed the need to adjust building inspection fees to better align with current market rates. A board member pointed out that the current compensation for local inspectors is $35 per hour. This adjustment aims to ensure that fees adequately cover departmental costs while remaining fair to the community. The board plans to compile a final recommendation for discussion at the next meeting.
In other business, the board approved the proposal for the Rebel Brew Run organized by St. Francis School. The event, a road race followed by a social gathering, received approval for a one-day liquor license set for April 11th. The principal, Haley Rogers, coordinated with the police to ensure a community-friendly route, and the police confirmed their presence for safety.
Water and sewer issues were also on the agenda, including discussions about billing disputes. A resident, Mr. Melo, received a 50% abatement on additional sewer charges due to confusion over pool meter availability. Similarly, abatements were approved for properties on Proctor Road and Reservation Road, where estimated bills were contested. The board emphasized the importance of accurate billing and monitoring to prevent future discrepancies.
The board also touched on executive session topics, including a submission by I3 Broadband to Eversource for pole access that had encountered delays. A motion was made to draft a letter to Eversource urging expedited approval to enhance telecommunications for residents, which passed unanimously.
Community initiatives were highlighted with an announcement of a tree lighting ceremony scheduled for December 7, contingent on favorable weather. Additionally, a community outreach effort was initiated to support a family in need with donations of food-related gift cards or non-perishable items to be dropped off at the fire station.
