Glen Ridge Borough Council Celebrates Soccer Triumph and Advances Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Glen Ridge Borough Council meeting was marked by a celebration of local athletic achievement and the approval of several key resolutions aimed at enhancing community facilities and services. The council honored the Glen Ridge High School boys soccer team for their state championship win, introduced funding resolutions for infrastructure improvements, and addressed various public safety and recreational projects.
The meeting commenced with a highlight from Mayor Deborah Mans, who read a proclamation celebrating the Glen Ridge High School boys soccer team for their outstanding performance in the 2025 season. The team clinched the Group One state championship. The mayor praised the team’s hard work, determination, and success, noting their impressive season record. The municipal building’s tower was illuminated in red to honor their victory, and team members, along with their families, were invited to share in the celebration and take photos. This recognition underscored the community’s pride in its young athletes, although the team members did not make formal remarks during the meeting.
In addition to celebrating local achievements, the council addressed several vital community development initiatives. A written communication from the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced a $29,000 municipal aid grant awarded for road reconstruction projects, a componet of ongoing infrastructure improvements. Further infrastructure enhancement was discussed with the introduction of resolution 160-25, which sought $40,000 in funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for ADA accessibility improvements at Freeman Gardens. The project aims to construct an ADA-compliant ramp and renovate existing bathroom facilities, reflecting rising costs due to inflation and federal wage requirements. The council expressed unanimous support for this resolution, highlighting the significance of Freeman Gardens as a community asset that hosts various events.
The meeting also saw the discussion of financial resolutions from the finance and administration committee. Resolution 155-25, concerning the payment of bills totaling approximately $134,375, was approved unanimously. Similarly, resolution 156-25, which proposed joining the New Jersey Solutions Joint Health Insurance Fund, promised significant improvements over the borough’s current state insurance program and was also unanimously supported. Lastly, resolution 157-25, authorizing budget transfers between appropriation accounts without altering the overall budget, passed without opposition.
Public safety and traffic concerns were prominent topics during the council meeting. Councilor Hughes reported on the public safety committee’s recent discussions, which included addressing roadway issues like the tightness of Carter Street and considering the addition of speed humps, though no recommendations were made. A request to paint a “slow down school zone” sign on Lynon Avenue was highlighted, and traffic surveys were conducted to assess various intersections for potential safety enhancements. Notably, a crash in September at the intersection of Sunset and Dog prompted a recommendation to install pylons to improve visibility. The committee’s efforts were recognized with the receipt of the AAA Silver Award for Community Traffic Safety, an upgrade from the previous year’s Bronze Award.
The council also approved resolution 158.25, which endorsed an ABC application by the Women’s Club for a social affairs permit for an upcoming fundraiser in February 2026. This resolution was passed unanimously.
Councilor Law acknowledged the efforts of the public safety and public works teams during the Thanksgiving race, expressing gratitude for their commitment during the holiday season. He introduced resolution 159-25, authorizing emergency repairs to a boiler at the Glen Ridge Municipal Complex, with funding available in the capital fund. This measure was approved unanimously.
Community spirit was further emphasized by Councilor Meyer, who reported on Parks and Recreation activities, including the closing of registration for winter programs and the community’s enthusiasm for the Ashenfelter race. Councilor Moody from the planning and development committee reiterated the importance of the Freeman Gardens ADA project, gaining unanimous approval for resolution 160-25.
The meeting concluded with an announcement from the Borough Administrator about the next council meeting, which is scheduled to be virtual and brief, set for December 22. Acknowledgment was given to Councilor Hughes for his 25 years of service, with plans for a retirement celebration upon his return from visiting family. The Chief announced the Toys for Tots event, organized by the Glen Ridge PBA, scheduled for December 14 at the train station.
