New Officer Sworn In and Roadway Projects Advanced at New Milford Borough Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent New Milford Borough Council meeting, the swearing-in of a new police officer and the advancement of key roadway projects funded by state grants took center stage. The meeting also highlighted commendations for police officers, discussed the town’s infrastructure plans, and addressed public health issues.
The meeting commenced with the swearing-in of Officer Brian Johnson, the latest addition to the New Milford Police Department. Chief Clancy introduced Johnson, a local graduate who transitioned from a Special Law Enforcement Officer to a full-time officer following his training at the Paya County Police Academy. Chief Clancy shared a personal note about Johnson’s recent engagement, adding a human element to the formal proceedings. The event underscored the department’s focus on strengthening community safety and building trust with residents.
In addition to welcoming Officer Johnson, the meeting featured several awards presented by Chief Clancy to officers for their exceptional service. This included a recognition of Captain Van Seders for his leadership during a chaotic incident on March 17, 2025, outside New Milford High School, where a juvenile was stabbed. This situation required a multi-agency response, resulting in arrests for attempted murder and aggravated assault. Officers who played key roles in the incident were commended.
Another notable police action involved Officers Duran and Kibblehan, who arrested suspects linked to a New York City shooting after identifying their vehicle during a traffic stop. This collaboration with the NYPD was highlighted as an achievement. The Chief also described an incident where officers, including Sergeant O’Brien and Officer Francine, responded to a welfare check that escalated to a homicide scene. Their swift actions in securing the scene led to homicide charges being filed.
In terms of infrastructure, the council addressed two major roadway improvement projects funded by NJ DOT grants. The first project, covering Clinton Avenue, Yugen Drive, Arlington Road, and Neil Street, had an estimated cost of $256,000. With a grant of $135,000, the remaining $121,000 would be funded using the road program capital account. The second project, involving East Woodland, Lumen Grave Ridge, and Pleasant, was estimated at $448,000, with a grant of $151,000, leaving a $296,600 funding gap. The finance committee supported utilizing $418,000 from the existing road program capital account. This strategy was approved by the council.
The council also focused on public health, with reports of a rise in police calls, including burglaries and domestic violence, while shoplifting incidents decreased due to heightened vigilance by local stores. Health updates included an advisory on flu season and an increase in measles cases, urging residents vaccinated in the 1950s and 1960s to verify their vaccination status. Programs at local schools were mentioned, focusing on health education and smoking cessation.
Council members also highlighted the success of public events in December, supported by the Department of Public Works (DPW), praised for their efficient holiday decorations and community engagement. The environmental commission was recognized for its ongoing work with grants and community energy planning, in collaboration with a consultant.
Appointments included Benty Veron to Planning Board Class 4 and Gerard Smithson as Planning Board Alternate One, all passing without opposition.
