Denville School Board Celebrates “Highly Performing” Designation Amid Financial and Personnel Updates
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Denville School Board addressed numerous topics, including the district’s recognition as “highly performing” by the Quality Assurance Committee, financial approvals, and personnel updates. The board also discussed the implications of the upcoming occupancy of Station Village apartments and a new health benefits proposal.
The meeting began with Superintendent Steven Forte announcing that the Denville School District had received a “highly performing” designation from the Quality Assurance Committee, with scores of 80% or better across all indicators. This classification reflects positively on the district’s educational standards and administrative practices. Forte also highlighted the nearing occupancy of the Station Village apartments, which, although a development, would not increase tax revenue for the school district due to a 30-year Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement. This agreement means that property taxes will remain based on the pre-construction valuation.
Financial matters took a prominent role in the meeting, with the board approving the 2024-2025 annual comprehensive financial audit report. Notably, the audit reported no recommendations. The board also approved the retroactive replacement of outdated classroom smartboards, costing $60,588 and funded through maintenance reserves. Additionally, obsolete office equipment, identified by asset tag and serial number, was approved for disposal.
The approval of a contract for a trained behavior technician at Lake View was another financial decision, with costs capped at $57,460. Other financial considerations included the renewal of a contract with Delta Dental of New Jersey, maintaining rates for an 18-month term. A new health benefits proposal was also discussed, involving a transition from the New Jersey State Health Benefits Program to Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, effective March 1, 2026. This transition aims to optimize healthcare provisions for the district’s employees.
Personnel updates were another focus of the meeting, with discussions on new hires, resignations, retirements, and employee leaves. The board approved a job description for a CDL-exempt school vehicle driver, anticipating that this would expand the pool of eligible drivers, addressing ongoing transportation challenges within the district. The approval of student interns from the Morris Null cadet teacher program was also a highlight, with board members expressing appreciation for former students aspiring to join the education field.
The board addressed several operational matters, including a request for retroactive approval to rent a mini bus from Brockway Township for the upcoming school year and a proposal to borrow a wrestling mat for a holiday tournament. The board also approved a quote for electrical services related to conduit reconfiguration at Lake View School, with costs totaling $5,745.60, funded through maintenance reserves.
In committee reports, board members discussed the importance of governance and policy-setting, emphasizing the collective strengths derived from their diverse backgrounds. One member’s expertise in Excel was particularly commended for expediting financial processes and improving budget accuracy. This acknowledgment highlights the board’s collaborative efforts and the value of individual contributions to its operations.
Public comments during the meeting reflected community engagement and support for district initiatives. Attendees expressed gratitude towards the town’s holiday parade and congratulated Superintendent Forte for his role as the grand marshal. Board members also recognized the leadership styles of past and current board presidents, with one member expressing a desire for the current president to continue in their role due to their effective leadership.
