Acushnet Library Board Approves New Dehumidifiers Amid Facility Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The Acushnet Library Board of Trustees meeting focused on significant facility updates and community engagement initiatives.
The board’s most pressing discussion centered on the need for new dehumidifiers in the library basement. Previous experiences with a company requiring a 50% deposit without an appropriate invoice prompted the library to explore alternative options. After evaluating two potential vendors, the board approved Dry Zone Basement Systems’ proposal for two new dehumidifiers at a cost of $4,751.90. The decision followed a review of quotes, with Dry Zone’s offering standing out due to its competitive pricing and clarity. The funds for this purchase were allocated from the library gift fund, and a yearly maintenance plan was included in the package.
In addition to the dehumidifiers, the board addressed the refurbishment of the library’s outdoor hour sign. A proposal from Stuck on New Design was reviewed and approved, allowing for the application of durable vinyl lettering. This decision was driven by a need for a clear, weather-resistant sign that could be easily updated to reflect any changes in library hours. The cost of this project was set at $120, and the board expressed satisfaction with its visual appeal and practicality.
The committee also approved the purchase of new shelving units for the children’s room, responding to an increased demand for more space to accommodate the growing graphic novel collection. The total cost for two shelving units was $1,267.77. The urgency of this addition was underscored by the current overflow of materials, and the board agreed on the importance of expanding the space to meet patron needs effectively.
Another highlight of the meeting was the successful jewelry sale, which generated positive community engagement and financial support for the library. Despite competing events, the sale was profitable.
The library director’s report included commendations for community contributions to the Shepherd’s Pantry, noting a significant rise in food donations and the need for multiple pickups. Furthermore, the director attended a valuable department head meeting, resulting in newfound access to update the library’s page on the town’s website, which had been outdated. This opportunity was seen as a means to enhance the library’s online presence and resource availability.
In a forward-looking segment, the board discussed strategic planning for the library’s future. A committee was formed to gather diverse input from stakeholders, including trustees and friends of the library, to develop a strategic plan. A Massachusetts-based consultant was retained to facilitate the planning meetings, with the first session scheduled for January 28. The board emphasized the importance of collecting comprehensive data to inform decisions.
The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming events, including a drop-in ornament craft session and a special holiday story time. Additionally, a unique program on researching the history of houses was scheduled for January 5, offering insights into historical research techniques. The library will be closed on Christmas Eve and operate with reduced hours on New Year’s Eve.
