New Ulm Commission Endorses QR Codes on Headstones, Pending Rule Updates
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Monuments and Cemetery Commission is moving forward with plans to allow QR codes on headstones and niche doors after discussing potential guidelines for the implementation of such technology. This decision is contingent upon the development and approval of new rules and regulations to ensure consistency and maintain the integrity of the monuments.
During the meeting, the commission debated the integration of QR codes, which would allow visitors to access digital memorials via their smartphones. The discussion revolved around ensuring that the QR codes are not permanently affixed or engraved into the headstones, to avoid any potential damage. The commission agreed on the need for the QR codes to be weatherproof and self-adhesive, with no paper versions allowed. Additionally, a disclaimer will be included to clarify that the city is not responsible for the content or maintenance of these QR codes. The commission emphasized that individuals who choose to use this technology will bear the cost and responsibility for maintaining their QR codes.
The commission also addressed the opening of a new columbarium, which features double niches. While the columbarium is essentially ready for use, with inquiries already received, the final step of engraving the numbers on top must wait until spring due to weather constraints. Despite this, the commission agreed to begin selling the double niches starting January 1.
In new business, the commission discussed necessary updates to the rules and regulations associated with the introduction of the new columbarium and QR code technology. Definitions for double niches and guidelines for their use were added to ensure uniformity in appearance and use. These updates will require city council approval once finalized.
