East Longmeadow Library Secures Grants for Accessibility Upgrades and Launches New Programming Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent East Longmeadow Library Board meeting, strides were reported in securing funding for accessibility enhancements and digital equity initiatives. The library successfully obtained five municipal ADA improvement grants, paving the way for vital infrastructure upgrades.
The library’s triumph in securing ADA grants was a focal point of discussion, with all five applications approved. These grants will fund essential improvements, including new flooring in non-carpeted areas, sidewalk repairs, a filling station water fountain, signage with Braille, and an assisted listening kit for program presentations. The board expressed enthusiasm for the rapid implementation of these projects. Collaboration with the Department of Public Works played a role in the application process.
In parallel, the library’s digital equity efforts received a boost through a grant from the Massachusetts Broadband Institute. This funding will enable the hiring of a digital navigator responsible for conducting technology workshops at the library, Pleasant View Senior Center, and the housing authority. The workshops, aimed at skill levels from beginner to advanced, will incorporate a “train the trainer” component, preparing participants to educate others. Participants will receive laptops. The board aims to launch these programs by late winter or early spring, with extensive advertising planned to ensure community-wide participation.
The meeting also addressed legislative matters affecting libraries. A “freedom to read” bill was highlighted, designed to protect individuals’ rights to access literature and support library workers. Another legislative focus was the eBook bill, which seeks to address the high costs of eBooks and eAudiobooks for libraries compared to consumer prices.
The children’s department hosted 23 programs with a strong attendance, bolstered by a successful partnership with Pathways for Parents. Teen programming remained robust despite challenges, maintaining engagement through initiatives like a teen test kitchen and craft afternoons. Adult programming saw collaborations with local organizations, and the introduction of a Library of Things initiative, featuring items like a blood pressure cuff and a metal detector.
The circulation and technical services report noted a slight fluctuation in item circulation and highlighted efforts to adjust vendor relations due to supply chain disruptions. The library introduced a new collection of Blu-rays and continued to expand its Library of Things, aligning with patron interests. Additionally, the library collected non-perishable items for local food banks.
Operational updates included the reorganization of magazine shelving due to changes in the physical collection, and the introduction of new technology such as Yodo players and Vox books. A session on generative AI, led by consultant Jane Stimpson, received positive feedback. Efforts to redesign the library focused on accessibility and comfort, incorporating feedback from stakeholders.
The board discussed the importance of ongoing legislative advocacy, referencing a library legislative breakfast where funding needs were addressed. A letter to Governor Healey regarding the FY27 budget request was shared, emphasizing the significance of state aid for library operations. The library received its first installment of state aid, with a second expected in the spring, supporting various operational costs.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on future projects, including acoustics improvements and a green communities grant for infrastructure updates. Professional development plans for a “human library” event were mentioned, highlighting the library’s innovative approach to community engagement. The Friends of the Library group reported on their upcoming events.
