Gardner School Committee Discusses Scholarship Celebration and Addresses Student Support Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Gardner School Committee meeting on December 8, 2025, was marked by discussions on new initiatives to celebrate academic achievements, support students facing challenges, and enhance educational strategies within the district. Superintendent Mark Pellegrino announced a new tradition to honor recipients of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship with a breakfast event, providing a unique opportunity for students and their families to celebrate together during school hours.
In an effort to recognize academic excellence, the superintendent read aloud the names of the 53 scholarship recipients, which included standout students such as Alicia Maldonado, Desiree Adam Makmang, and Timothy Baker, along with Megan Dorsy, Jasmine Edwards, and Cole Martins from Gardner Academy.
The meeting shifted focus to matters surrounding student support, particularly addressing the challenges faced by students at Gardner Academy. Dr. Barado presented the school improvement plan, highlighting the significant hurdles students encounter, which include high rates of mental health diagnoses, substance use history, and disabilities. The presentation underscored the school’s dedication to understanding and supporting students through innovative approaches and collaborations with local health officials, especially in light of concerns about increased substance use, such as vaping.
To further aid students in overcoming obstacles, the school has partnered with organizations such as Growing Places and Massabilities, providing initiatives like the “Serve Safe” certification and employment skills training. These programs are designed to enhance students’ career readiness and life skills, offering practical benefits that align with their academic pursuits. Additionally, partnerships with Mass Hire have facilitated student internships, broadening opportunities for real-world experience.
Moreover, the committee addressed the importance of trauma-informed practices within the school environment. These practices focus on creating predictability and consistency, providing a stable and supportive atmosphere for students. The “Take Five” space was highlighted as a key component of this approach, offering students a designated area to manage difficulties and engage in community-building activities, such as weekly circles and advisories.
The effectiveness of these support systems is evident in the reported decrease in office discipline referrals. This trend was noted particularly at the middle school level, where there has been a significant drop in referrals, highlighting the district’s progress in nurturing a supportive educational environment.
In other updates, the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in the district was discussed, with committee members expressing pride in the staff’s dedication and the district’s advancement compared to others.
Additionally, the meeting concluded with the acknowledgment of Shannon Ward’s departure after four years of service on the committee. Her contributions and unique perspectives were lauded by fellow members, who expressed gratitude for her dedication and impact. The committee also approved a withdrawal of $322,770 for grants aimed at supporting teachers and staff, adjusting the application timeline to better accommodate their needs during the holiday season.
