Princeton School Board Addresses $178,000 Wire Fraud Incident and Elects New Leadership
- Meeting Overview:
The Princeton School Board meeting focused on administrative changes, a financial incident involving wire fraud, and operational updates to enhance transparency. Newly elected members took their oath of office, and new leadership roles were filled, alongside discussions on committee meeting schedules and technological shifts.
A primary topic of discussion was a $178,000 wire fraud incident related to referendum projects. Payments were mistakenly sent to a vendor following an email received in September 2024. The issue came to light in December 2025 when the vendor inquired about non-payment. The board’s legal counsel recommended filing a police report. Officials assured attendees that the district itself did not incur financial loss; rather, the vendor was impacted by the fraudulent activity.
In terms of leadership, the meeting was marked by the swearing-in of new board members following the recent school election held on November 4, 2025. Out of 21,983 registered voters, 10,547 participated, electing Erica Snder, Dafna Kendal, and Susan Kanter. These newly elected members formally took their places by affirming their commitment to uphold the constitutions of the United States and New Jersey.
Attention then turned to the election of board officers. In a show of confidence, Dafna Kendal was nominated and subsequently elected as board president. Her nomination was supported by remarks highlighting her leadership during challenging times and her dedication to the well-being of students and staff. Kendal expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and emphasized that student success remains the board’s guiding principle. Susan Kanter was re-elected as vice president, noted for her calm and effective advocacy on various issues. Both Kendal and Kanter expressed optimism for the board’s collaborative efforts in the coming year.
Further administrative adjustments were discussed, including a transition from using BoardDocs to Google Docs for managing board agendas. This change is expected to save approximately $10,000 and aims to streamline processes by reducing distractions during meetings.
The meeting also addressed the scheduling of committee meetings, with discussions emphasizing the need for flexibility to accommodate board members’ schedules. There was a proposal to shift the Student Achievement committee to a 1:00 PM slot and reconsider the timing of the Policy committee. Ensuring optimal attendance and participation in committee meetings was highlighted as a priority.
Attention was also given to the consent agenda, which involved procedural considerations and included an ethics training session scheduled for January 27th. This training aims to offer board members a humorous yet insightful perspective on their responsibilities.
A noteworthy item on the consent agenda was awarding a contract for playground redevelopment at several schools. This project had previously faced challenges due to a lack of bids. However, this time, bids were received, leading to a discussion of a base bid of $1.445 million, with an additional $225,000 for extra work. Prior to voting on this contract, a public comment period was opened but saw no participation. Ultimately, the consent agenda was approved, excluding the playground contract, with one member abstaining from the vote due to insufficient information.
