Elizabeth Ginsburg Elected as New Glen Ridge School Board President Amid Leadership Transition
- Meeting Overview:
Elizabeth Ginsburg has been elected as the new president of the Glen Ridge School Board, succeeding a long-serving predecessor. The decision came after a contentious leadership debate that emphasized the need for fresh perspectives within the board. The meeting also addressed several other topics, including a new cell phone policy and noteworthy community donations.
Following this, nominations opened for the board president position. Jocelyn Gotautle was initially nominated, with her nominator emphasizing the need for change and effective communication within the community. The nominator highlighted the contributions of the previous president, who had served for two decades, but argued that it was time for a new leader with a fresh perspective. Concerns were raised over the previous president’s ultimatum to resign if not re-elected, which was described as a threat to stability.
Despite these arguments, the majority of board members voted against Gotautle, leading to the nomination of Elizabeth Ginsburg. Ginsburg received the majority support and was confirmed as the new board president.
After assuming her role, Ginsburg presided over the election for other board positions. Gotautle was later nominated for first vice president and received unanimous support, highlighting a spirit of collaboration despite earlier disagreements. Kristen O’Neal was then nominated and confirmed as second vice president without opposition.
The meeting also addressed a new cell phone policy, soon to be signed into law by Governor Murphy. This legislation requires school boards to develop policies governing the use of cell phones and internet-connected devices by students during school hours, on school buses, or at school events. This policy aims to address the increasing presence of technology in education and its potential impact on student learning environments.
The superintendent took the opportunity to thank Bob Gomes and his crew for maintaining school facilities throughout challenging weather conditions during the winter break. He also expressed appreciation for the positive spirits of students returning to school.
Another highlight was a $5,000 donation from the Lewis and Virginia Clemente Foundation to the Sharing the Arts program. The board expressed gratitude for the foundation’s contribution, underscoring its long-standing connection to the Glen Ridge community.
Public correspondence received since the last meeting on December 16 was acknowledged, though specific details were not disclosed. The correspondence primarily involved personnel matters at Central School.
During the public comment periods, Fran Hong, chair of the Glen Ridge Educational Foundation, reported on the success of a recent race event. She described it as possibly the best ever, with widespread community engagement and positive financial outcomes despite challenges. Hong thanked the board and administration for their support and expressed hope for continued backing to settle outstanding event bills.
