Bloomingdale Borough Council Highlights Promotions and Projects in the New Year
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Bloomingdale Borough Council meeting marked the swearing-in of new council members and celebrated significant promotions within the police department. The council also discussed major projects, including a new playground at Boat Pond funded by a substantial grant, and looked forward to additional community improvements in 2026.
The meeting began with the swearing-in ceremony of two new council members, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and the responsibilities that come with public service. One newly sworn-in member expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them by the community and highlighted the significance of civic involvement. The other member reflected on their deep roots in the community, pledging to work diligently and respectfully for the residents of Bloomingdale.
The promotion of police officers to the rank of sergeant was a focal point of the meeting. Chief Greenwood spoke about the evolving challenges in modern law enforcement and the need for officers to be both problem solvers and community partners. Two officers, Kevin Pearl and Vincent Graiosa, were honored for their dedication and leadership within the department. Officer Pearl, a 14-year veteran of the Bloomingdale Police Department and former United States Marine, was recognized for his roles in community engagement, including serving as a head instructor for a junior police academy. Officer Graiosa, with 13 years of service, was commended for his mentorship and leadership in various outreach initiatives. Chief Greenwood underscored the importance of these promotions as investments in public safety and the future of the department.
In addition to personnel changes, the council discussed several key projects aimed at enhancing the community’s infrastructure and amenities. Of particular note was the recently completed playground at Boat Pond, which was funded by a $1.2 million grant from the county and Green Acres, incurring no local costs to taxpayers. The mayor announced plans for the replacement of the Delayer Field Playground, with a $330,000 grant secured for completion by spring. Other planned improvements included the reconstruction of Catherine Street and the awarding of a contract for the rebuild of Elm Street, Am Street, and Ant Street, supported by a $350,000 grant. These projects are part of a broader initiative to address flooding issues and improve local infrastructure.
The meeting also covered routine administrative matters, including the appointment of a council president, various professional service agreements, and the adoption of budgetary resolutions. A notable amendment to the payroll policy was discussed, changing the payment frequency from 26 to 24 pays per year, which was intended to streamline financial processes. The council noted an allowance from the state to increase the 2026 budget to 35%, up from the previous limit of 20%, which was seen as a beneficial adjustment.
