Lake Como Borough Council Faces Councilman Resignation and Explores One-Way Street Proposal
- Meeting Overview:
The Lake Como Borough Council held a reorganization meeting where developments included the resignation of Councilman Nick DeMauro, the election of Councilwoman Hawley Scull as Council President, and a proposal to convert Fernwood Road into a one-way street. These events were accompanied by routine procedural updates and public input on local infrastructure concerns.
A notable event at the meeting was the announcement of Councilman Nick DeMauro’s resignation, effective January 5, 2026. The Mayor acknowledged DeMauro’s nine years of service and noted that the Democratic Committee would have 15 days to suggest three candidates for the vacancy. The Council will vote on the replacement, who will seamlessly fit into the upcoming election cycle.
In addition to addressing DeMauro’s departure, the Council undertook the reorganization of its leadership structure. Councilwoman Hawley Scull was elected as the new Council President after a nomination and unanimous roll call vote. This leadership change comes with new committee assignments, including Councilman Dano transitioning to the finance committee and Councilman Riners leading the Public Works Committee. These roles are strategically important as they align with the Council’s priorities for the upcoming year, including infrastructure and financial management.
During the meeting, the Council also tackled various resolutions, such as Resolution 2026-29, which authorized a one-year agreement with the county SPCA for animal control services. This resolution passed with unanimous support. Another important resolution was 2026-34, which involved updating the personnel policies and procedures manual to comply with state and federal law changes. Adjustments included revisions to the Americans with Disabilities Act language and changes to sick leave and bereavement leave policies.
Public comments during the session brought attention to local infrastructure issues, particularly a proposal to convert Fernwood Road into a one-way street. Resident Jack Dilva voiced concerns about the current two-way traffic, citing safety hazards due to increased vehicle congestion from Airbnbs and rentals in the area. Dilva argued that a one-way designation would enhance safety, particularly at a blind turn frequented by large trucks, and create additional parking spaces. In response, a council member explained that such a change would require thorough consideration and professional input.
The discussion on Fernwood Road highlighted the need for community consensus and careful deliberation. Residents were encouraged to participate in future meetings and engage with the Council through various channels, including email and monthly coffee events with the Mayor.
