Emerson Borough Secures Nearly $2 Million in Federal Funds for Flooding Solutions
- Meeting Overview:
The Emerson Borough Council’s recent meeting focused on several initiatives for 2026, with a emphasis on infrastructure improvements aimed at addressing flooding issues. The council announced that almost $2 million in federal grant funds have been secured to implement stormwater and drainage improvements in vulnerable areas. These projects are currently in the design phase, and the council has also received a separate grant of $129,561 for road resurfacing following the drainage enhancements.
In addition to the flood mitigation efforts, the meeting highlighted various infrastructure projects completed or underway. The Cindy Lane and Randolph pump station projects are now operational, contributing to the borough’s enhanced water management capabilities. A shared street sweeping service with Washington Township has been deemed successful, while the borough’s collaboration with PSEG has culminated in the completion of a gas system upgrade project and subsequent roadway repaving to ensure safety.
Further infrastructure developments included receiving an $85,500 grant from Bergen County for installing new ADA-compliant doors at the senior center, with installation expected by March. A forest drone study is planned to assess the white-tailed deer population in the area, funded by an $8,000 grant. Additionally, $7,500 has been secured for senior transportation services for the upcoming year.
A shared services agreement with the Board of Education was noted, which aims to enhance school safety through the introduction of a student resource officer. The council urged residents to sign up for emergency notifications via the RAVE alert system and announced the transition of the borough’s website domain from .org to .gov to enhance security and reliability.
Community engagement and volunteerism were strongly encouraged. The Emerson Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Fire Department were highlighted as avenues for fulfilling community service. The borough’s library was commended for its diverse programs catering to all age groups. Meanwhile, the recreation commission was recognized for organizing events such as a summer kickoff and a fall harvest festival, which featured activities like hayrides and live music.
The meeting also included the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected council members, Nicole Argenzia and O’Neal Ellis, each committing to serve the community with integrity and dedication. Councilwoman Argenzia expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her by the residents and emphasized her commitment to prioritizing the community’s needs. Councilman Ellis similarly expressed his dedication to serving Emerson’s interests.
The council also discussed the continuation of the borough’s home improvement program into 2026, which provides assistance to eligible residents. The groundbreaking for phase two of the veterans home project was noted, which aims to provide affordable housing for disabled veterans.
Digital speed signs have been installed at various locations to remind drivers of speed limits as part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety. The council is working on redesigning the borough’s website to improve online engagement, aligning with broader efforts to enhance communication and service delivery to residents.
