Community Outcry at Pascack Valley School Board Meeting Over Varsity Football Program Leadership
- Meeting Overview:
The Pascack Valley Regional High School District Board of Education meeting was marked by a heated public commentary session, where concerned parents and community members voiced dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the varsity football program. The discontent centered around safety concerns, the team’s preparation, and overall performance under the current head coach.
The most pressing topic during the meeting was the community’s dissatisfaction with the varsity football program, specifically under Coach Ber’s leadership. Several parents and community members, including Bob McMaro from Riverville, expressed their concerns about the coach’s ability to prepare the team adequately. McMaro highlighted a conversation he had with Mr. Vanerson, noting disappointment upon learning from external sources that Coach Ber retained administrative support despite a season where the team’s readiness was questioned. McMaro referenced a petition signed by about 15 players who were opposed to Coach Ber’s continued leadership. He further noted that the youth football programs in nearby areas, such as Hillsdale and Riverville, boasted strong community and coaching cultures, which contrasted sharply with the current state of the varsity program.
Jody Tesser from Woodliff Lake, another community member, brought attention to broader academic concerns, pointing out a drop in the district’s state rankings from 42 to 59. Though she expressed satisfaction with her daughters’ education, she questioned the gap between perceived educational quality and students’ college acceptance rates. She proposed forming a committee to investigate and improve the district’s standing with college admissions officers, stressing that this issue impacts all residents, not just those with direct ties to the school.
Jose Costa, also from Rivervale, focused his comments on safety concerns within the football program. He observed a decline in the team’s performance, with the record dropping from 7-1 to 4-4. Costa noted that nearly 200 community members had signed a petition calling for changes in the coaching staff, citing poor preparation and unsafe practices as concerns. He detailed instances of miscommunication regarding practice plans and uniform requirements, arguing that such disorganization could lead to hazardous situations on the field.
Further, Mr. Farovic from Hillsdale criticized the varsity football program for losing its tradition of discipline and accountability under Coach Ber. He underscored that the season was disappointing not just in terms of wins but also regarding leadership and safety. Farovic highlighted that the team had only one scrimmage throughout the season, which he deemed insufficient for proper player preparation. He raised serious issues about safety and liability, pointing out that physicals and helmet consent forms were not adequately managed, putting the district at risk.
These public comments highlighted a significant level of dissatisfaction with the varsity football program’s leadership. There was a common sentiment among speakers that the current coaching situation was harming player development, safety, and the program’s overall integrity. The board was urged to consider these concerns seriously as they prepared to move forward with the meeting’s agenda.
Beyond the football program discussion, the meeting included several procedural matters. The election results for the board of education were announced, with Elizabeth Wood receiving 1,922 votes and James Disbale garnering 2,964 votes. Newly elected members Elizabeth Calderon and James Disbale took their oaths of office, committing to their responsibilities on the board. Subsequently, nominations and elections for the board president and vice president positions were conducted, resulting in Miss Steph and Elizabeth Cro being elected, respectively.
An update on a potential Verizon cell tower installation was also discussed. Board members addressed ongoing concerns about inadequate cell reception within the building, particularly during sporting events. Conversations with the Hillsdale borough administrator suggested that service improvements were expected within the year, making further pursuit of a tower installation on school property unnecessary at this time.
