Kenilworth Planning Board Honors Longtime Planner Kevin O’Brien’s Retirement and Appoints New Members
- Meeting Overview:
The Kenilworth Planning Board meeting was marked by developments, including the retirement recognition of Kevin O’Brien, who served as the board’s planner for nearly three decades, and the swearing-in of several new planning board members. The board also appointed professionals for the upcoming year and elected its chairman and vice-chairman.
One of the most notable moments of the meeting was the acknowledgment of Kevin O’Brien, who has been an instrumental figure in the borough’s planning efforts for 29 years. A proclamation was read to honor O’Brien. The board expressed its gratitude for O’Brien’s dedication, innovative solutions, and professionalism, which have left a lasting legacy in Kenilworth. During his remarks, O’Brien expressed his appreciation for the recognition, stating, “This has been my pleasure to serve this borough,” and acknowledged the dedication of the public servants he has worked with since 1997. Health issues have led O’Brien to retire sooner than planned, but he intends to complete the master plan with the board before his departure.
The public comment section of the meeting saw several members express their gratitude towards O’Brien. A former council member, Tony Perno, shared his appreciation for O’Brien’s guidance and composure during planning discussions, which had been instrumental in helping him make informed decisions. Perno reminisced about their shared experiences since their first meeting in 2012 and extended well-wishes for O’Brien’s retirement. Another community member, Suzanne Crinkoli, also congratulated O’Brien and the new board members, sharing a personal anecdote about O’Brien’s kindness during her home rebuilding process.
The meeting also focused on the annual reorganization of the planning board. Mayor Linda Karlovitch announced the appointments of Michael Scuderi as a Class Two member, with a term ending in 2026, and Rich Picerno and Frank Mazzeo as Class Four members, with terms ending in 2029. Several alternate members were also appointed with terms concluding in 2027. Mr. Scuderi and Tony Pugliese were absent, necessitating their oaths of office at a future meeting.
The swearing-in ceremony for present members, including Lewis DeMondo and Daniel Crinki, took place. Following this, a roll call confirmed a quorum, and the board proceeded with the election of officers. Rich Picerno was unanimously reinstated as chairman, expressing gratitude for the continued trust placed in him. Larry Clementi was elected vice-chairman, also receiving unanimous support.
Attention then turned to appointing professionals for the planning board for the upcoming year. The board approved the hiring of Hired Associates as the external planner and appointed the law firm Cersini and Halibac, with Mr. DeMarco as the board’s attorney. Patrick Conland, serving as the attorney for the evening, was introduced to the board. Additionally, Center State Engineering, with Mr. Russo and Mr. Massie, was appointed as the engineering firm for the board, and Marco Antonio was appointed as the videographer for the year.
As the meeting concluded, the mayor emphasized the importance of transparency, professionalism, and respect in board decisions. She commended both returning and new members for their commitment to the borough’s development and expressed appreciation for their often-unrecognized hard work.
