Brookline Board Tackles Health Initiatives Amidst License Renewal Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Brookline Select Board’s recent meeting on January 13, 2026, was marked by discussions on several topics, including the opioid crisis, license renewals, and diversity initiatives. Key decisions were made to address public health concerns, promote civic engagement, and ensure community resources are effectively utilized.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the introduction of a public health initiative designed to combat the ongoing opioid crisis in Brookline. Dr. Klinski presented “Project Can Connect,” a pilot program aimed at increasing access to essential health resources through public health vending machines. These machines, to be installed at Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village public libraries, will provide 24/7 access to naloxone, fentanyl test strips, drug disposal bags, hygiene products, and seasonal items for individuals experiencing homelessness.
However, concerns were raised about the geographic placement of these health stations, with some members of the board questioning whether the focus on North Brookline might overlook the needs of South Brookline residents. Suggestions were made to consider placing one of the vending machines at the Putterham Library to ensure equitable access throughout the community. He promised to reassess the locations for broader community reach and confirmed that naloxone is already distributed at various municipal buildings, including Putterham Library.
The discussion also covered the financial sustainability of the pilot program. While initial costs are covered by current funds, there was a cautious approach toward committing to a long-term solution without first evaluating the program’s success. The project includes considerations for leasing equipment to ease maintenance burdens, with community input sought to gauge effectiveness.
In addition to health initiatives, the meeting addressed ongoing challenges in the town’s license renewal process. The transition to a fully electronic system has revealed compliance issues that were previously unnoticed, and while most licenses are compliant or nearly compliant, a few remain in violation. The board approved fully compliant licenses and granted conditional approval for those nearing compliance, allowing time until mid-February for outstanding issues to be resolved. The electronic system, despite its initial challenges, has enhanced oversight and is expected to streamline the process moving forward.
The meeting also featured a notable interview with Masu Hak, a candidate for the Commission on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations. Hak, a precinct 14 resident with a professional background in employment law and community volunteerism, articulated her vision for advancing diversity work in Brookline. She emphasized the need for active listening and civility in community discussions, proposing initiatives like discussion circles to promote dialogue on contentious issues. Hak highlighted the importance of existing subcommittees, particularly the immigrant advancement and employment subcommittees, and expressed interest in collaborating with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to address disparities in town governance.
Further discussion on diversity initiatives included the implementation of a previously passed warrant article recognizing June as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, with ongoing efforts to enhance visibility through events and public symbols like painted crosswalks. The board conveyed openness to suggestions for expanding these recognitions.
Community engagement was a recurring theme throughout the meeting, with board members encouraging participation in upcoming events, such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and the Brookline Commission for Women’s annual Women of the Year event.
