Raritan Planning Board Faces Ongoing Parking Struggles at Diamond Nation
- Meeting Overview:
The Raritan Planning Board meeting on January 14, 2026, tackled issues, most notably the ongoing parking challenges at Diamond Nation, where special events have led to offsite parking problems. Concerns were raised about public safety and adherence to previously established parking plans, highlighting a need for clearer definitions and more robust management strategies. Additionally, the board’s reorganization saw Edward J. Gettings and Donna Drewes elected as chair and vice chair, respectively, while several appointments were made for the year.
The primary focus of the meeting was on the parking issues at Diamond Nation, which have persisted despite conditions set in prior approvals. The board expressed concerns over parking during special events, particularly a lacrosse event that resulted in vehicles parking on roadways and grassy areas, violating site plan approvals. A representative of Diamond Nation acknowledged these issues and outlined steps taken to mitigate future problems, including an overflow parking plan and compliance with township ordinance requirements for special events. This ordinance allows property owners to apply for permits that include detailed parking and circulation plans, limiting the number of such events to three per year.
Board members questioned whether these measures would sufficiently address the parking issues, noting that problems extended beyond the lacrosse events to regular baseball events. A site visit on November 15 highlighted numerous vehicles parked improperly, raising further concerns about safety. The board emphasized its responsibility to ensure public health and safety, considering reopening the hearing to address these issues more comprehensively.
Jack Gus, the owner of Diamond Nation, apologized for prior mismanagement and assured the board of access to offsite parking for up to 450 cars. However, board members remained uneasy, referencing Resolution 20126, which outlined parking conditions that had not been met. The need for a review of these conditions was stressed to prevent increased community anxiety and ensure compliance moving forward. A motion was proposed to reopen the hearings to consider new evidence and potentially amend the resolution to address these longstanding parking concerns.
In addition to the Diamond Nation discussion, the board conducted its annual reorganization, electing Edward J. Gettings as chair and Donna Drewes as vice chair. Several appointments were approved, including Jeffrey Vaccarella as assistant secretary and Joseph Tauriello as board attorney. The board established various committees, including the on-site and technical review committees, and confirmed liaisons for other township committees.
The meeting also addressed procedural matters, such as the approval of previous meeting minutes and resolutions related to administrative tasks. A discussion arose regarding notification processes for public notices, emphasizing the importance of maintaining existing requirements until new resolutions are adopted.
Public hearings included requests from Extra Space Storage and the Djankowski minor subdivision for extensions on their applications. These requests were approved unanimously. The board also scheduled future planning applications and discussed the logistics of site visits and hearing dates to streamline the review process.
