Cannon Falls City Council Discusses Nursing Home Property Concerns and Fire Department Donations
- Meeting Overview:
During the latest Cannon Falls City Council meeting, discussions included the ongoing issues with a hazardous nursing home property and accepted donations to the local fire department. The council also addressed future city planning, including grant applications for redevelopment and infrastructure improvements.
A major focus of the meeting was the condition of the vacant nursing home property, which has been deemed hazardous due to break-ins and vandalism. An owner involved with the property reached out to the council, expressing intentions to act as the primary contact moving forward. The council stressed the need for immediate action to secure the site and prevent unauthorized access. The city offered information on potential funding through the DEED redevelopment program, which could aid in the property’s demolition and subsequent redevelopment. However, the upcoming February grant deadline will not be met, pushing potential funding applications to August.
Additionally, the council acknowledged two monetary donations to the fire department. The Cannon Falls Fire Department Relief Association contributed $11,440, and Mstead Medical Center donated $500. These funds are earmarked to support the department’s operations and services. The council also approved a resolution for a donor recognition sign at John Burch Park, further solidifying community support for local services.
City planning and development were also prominently discussed. A conditional use permit was approved for outdoor storage for Canson Construction, and a Greater Minnesota small city’s housing aid grant program application was authorized. The council also highlighted plans to upgrade local ice rinks to better withstand varying weather conditions.
In another noteworthy update, the local chamber of commerce is in the process of selecting a new executive director. Discussions included potential office space at city hall to support the chamber’s operations. The council showed willingness to accommodate the chamber’s needs without expecting rent, facilitating continued community events and economic activities.
