Nutley Rent Leveling Board Approves Cost-Saving Legal Notice Publication Shift
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Nutley Rent Leveling Board meeting, discussions and resolutions marked the evening, including an impactful decision to transition the publication of legal notices from local newspapers to the township’s official website, effective March 1, 2026. This move is aimed at reducing costs associated with legal notice publications and was met with unanimous approval from the board members.
The decision to shift legal notices online was highlighted as a cost-effective strategy. Until March 1, legal notices will continue to be published in designated newspapers, but the transition to online publishing is expected to streamline the process and reduce expenditures. The board members expressed appreciation for the clerical departments’ efforts in facilitating this change.
In addition to the legal notice publication shift, the board also addressed several resolutions and initiatives aimed at community improvements and resident safety. Notably, a resolution was passed to authorize a grant application from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. This grant, approximately $75,000, is intended for the Local Recreation Improvement Grant Program to fund critical pathway and stairway enhancements at Father Glattback Memorial Park. These improvements are designed to provide safer and more accessible access to the park’s recreational fields and amenities, benefitting both residents and visitors. A slight amendment was made to clarify signing authority for the grant, which the Mayor confirmed would be rectified.
Further discussions included roadway improvement projects on Reeland Avenue and Coyman Avenue. The board reviewed bids and awarded contracts to DNL Paving Contractors, who were identified as the low bidder for both projects. Subsequent change orders for both projects were unanimously approved, resulting in decreased contract amounts. These projects are funded through grants from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The board also addressed a resolution concerning the extension of a contract with Turnout Uniforms for the furnishing and delivery of police dispatchers and crossing guard uniforms. This contract extension is set to last until December 31, 2026, with funds contingent upon the adoption of the 2026 budget.
In a series of resolutions recognizing significant cultural and health observances, the board declared February as Black History Month, encouraging residents to engage with and honor African-American contributions throughout history. February was also proclaimed as American Heart Health Month, aiming to raise awareness about cardiovascular health, particularly among women. The initiative includes designating February 6 as National Wear Red Day, with municipal buildings set to be illuminated in red to promote heart disease awareness. Additionally, January was recognized as National Blood Donor Month, highlighting the need for blood donations during the winter months and encouraging community participation in blood drives.
The meeting also included a public safety announcement regarding a decrease in house break-ins and car thefts, with credit given to the local police department for their efforts. However, pedestrian safety remained a concern, especially at crossings, with particular attention given to a recent incident on Center Street. Residents were urged to exercise caution, especially in winter conditions where sun glare can impair visibility, and to use crosswalks and wear reflective clothing at night.
Concluding the meeting, the board addressed temporary appropriations for pension and debt service for 2026, noting the necessity of these appropriations due to payments being due before the final budget adoption. This financial decision, along with discussions about its community impact, was moved, seconded, and passed with affirmative votes from all board members.
