Wyckoff Council Honors Ramapo High Soccer Team and Prepares for Infrastructure and Health Service Changes
- Meeting Overview:
The Wyckoff Town Council meeting on January 20, 2025, covered a range of topics, from celebrating local sports achievements to addressing infrastructure projects and changes in health services. The council recognized the Ramapo High School boys varsity soccer team, discussed ongoing infrastructure work, and considered amendments for affordable housing zoning, alongside updates on community services and health agreements.
The council meeting commenced with a proclamation honoring the Ramapo High School boys varsity soccer team for their achievements, including winning the New Jersey Group Three state championship and the Bergen County soccer tournament. The team’s impressive record of 21 wins and one loss earned them the third spot in New Jersey and the 25th nationally. The proclamation praised the head coach, assistant coaches, parents, and the community for their unwavering support, and it concluded by congratulating the players for their dedication and hard work. This recognition highlighted the community’s pride in its youth’s accomplishments and set a celebratory tone for the meeting.
Beyond this celebratory moment, the council addressed pressing infrastructural updates. Ridgewood Water contractors are currently installing raw water mains on Caldwell Drive, necessitating police detours to ensure smooth traffic flow. These ongoing infrastructure improvements are part of a broader effort to enhance the town’s utilities and public services. Additionally, the road department reported challenges due to recent winter storms, consuming significant salt supplies, prompting an order for an additional 600 tons. The mayor noted the taxing nature of these storms on resources, emphasizing the need for preparedness in future weather events.
In terms of health services, the council was informed that the Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission would cease providing well-baby services to non-member municipalities, including Wyckoff. A shared service agreement with the Midber Regional Health Commission for these services was proposed and will be discussed in an upcoming Board of Health meeting.
The council also focused on zoning and development, with an ordinance amendment introduced concerning the zoning for property at the Abundant Life Church. This amendment aims to align zoning codes with future affordable housing developments, a necessity tied to ongoing affordable housing settlements. Such amendments are important to accommodating the town’s growth and addressing housing needs.
The Planning Board reported several applications, including one for a new restaurant named Taste of Cuban, set to occupy the old red barn between White Cleaners and Miller’s Pharmacy. This application has been deemed complete and will proceed to a public hearing. Additionally, a new pediatric dental office is proposed on the site of the former Michael Banimal Clinic, with its application also advancing to a public hearing. These developments reflect the town’s ongoing expansion and efforts to enhance local amenities.
The council also reviewed routine matters, including the issuance of various licenses and permits by the clerk’s office, with 1,515 dog licenses and 67 cat licenses processed. The office managed nearly 1,000 metal recycling requests and issued 134 parking passes for the Cornerstone Church parking ride.
In community safety, speed limit signs have been installed on Mountain Avenue, and residents were reminded to license their pets by March 31st to avoid late fines. The fire department’s year-end report revealed 727 fire calls in 2025, totaling over 23,000 man-hours, with recruitment efforts emphasized to bolster the department’s capabilities.
The council also discussed a special emergency appropriation of $160,000 for the preparation of approved tax maps, with reimbursement planned over five years. This financial planning is part of the council’s strategy to manage long-term municipal finances effectively.
The meeting concluded with a motion to enter a closed session to discuss pending and anticipated litigation and personnel matters, with assurances that no further actions would be taken before adjournment.
