Cliffside Park School Board Discusses Multi-Purpose Room, Italy Trip, and AI Curriculum Integration
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Cliffside Park School Board meeting covered a range of topics including the completion of a new multi-purpose room at School 6, plans for a student trip to Italy, and discussions on integrating AI into the high school curriculum.
The meeting opened with the announcement of the completion of the new multi-purpose room at School 6. This facility is intended to serve as a versatile space for both the school and the community’s recreation department. Board members expressed gratitude for the efforts of individuals involved in bringing this project to fruition. This new addition is viewed as a valuable resource that will benefit students and community members alike by providing a space for diverse activities and events.
One of the key highlights was the discussion of a planned trip to Italy for students and staff. The trip is to be overseen by a teacher identified as Miss Russo. This international excursion is expected to offer students an enriching experience, allowing them to explore Italian culture and history firsthand. It was noted that such experiences are invaluable for broadening students’ perspectives and enhancing their learning beyond the classroom.
The board also addressed the evolving educational landscape by discussing the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the high school curriculum. During the public comment session, a community member raised the question of whether AI courses should be incorporated into the curriculum. Board members deliberated on the importance of embedding AI into existing subjects rather than establishing standalone courses. They reflected on previous experiences with technology integration, emphasizing the need to adapt teaching methods to include AI to maintain educational relevance and prepare students for future opportunities.
In addition, the board meeting acknowledged January as Board of Education Recognition Month. This designation highlights the dedication and voluntary service of school board members, whose efforts contribute to the educational system. An official policy reflecting the New Jersey School Boards Association’s declaration was read, recognizing the contributions of local school board members throughout the state.
Financial discussions were also on the agenda, with updates on the ongoing development of the 2026-2027 budget. The board is set to hold meetings with the finance committee, full board, and municipality in mid to late February to discuss budgetary matters. A special meeting for the tentative budget approval is tentatively scheduled for March 5, with a submission deadline to the county and state on March 6. Additionally, the board approved a contract for maintenance inspections and the installation of new backboards and height adjusters in the multi-purpose room, selecting JGB Sports for the project.
The board also reviewed a grant application for the Lyft grant, aimed at enhancing literacy within the community. If awarded, the grant could provide up to $60,000 for purchasing books and staffing personnel to strengthen collaboration between the school system and the public library. Optimism was expressed about receiving positive news regarding this grant in the coming weeks or months.
Another topic of concern was the district’s rising medical and prescription benefit costs, which have increased significantly, with the January invoice reaching $1.1 million, up from $855,000 in December. Board members discussed the challenge of managing these costs, which many districts face, and a consultant suggested that high costs may persist over the next year, posing budgetary challenges.
Student council members from the high school and middle school were present at the meeting, sharing positive feedback about recent renovations, including updates to the cafeteria and the new gym environment. There was a suggestion to honor the milestone of these renovations with a display recognizing the contributions of the board and administrative professionals involved in the upgrades.
