New Providence School Board Honors Longtime Members and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The New Providence School Board convened to address various topics, including honoring longtime board members Bernardet Kakaro and Joseph F. Walsh for their service, discussing student achievements, and approving essential school facilities projects. The board also deliberated on the school calendar for the 2027-2028 academic year and plans for ongoing and future infrastructure improvements.
The meeting’s central topic was the presentation of resolutions honoring the service of two departing board members, Bernardet Kakaro and Joseph F. Walsh. Kakaro was recognized for her twelve years of service, during which she held numerous leadership roles. The resolution read in her honor stated, “On behalf of a grateful community, the New Providence Board of Education presents this award to you in recognition of 12 years of dedicated public service as a member of the Board of Education.” Kakaro’s contributions were acknowledged as having immeasurably benefited the children of the district through her knowledge and tireless efforts. Applause followed her recognition.
The board meeting also celebrated various student achievements. Notably, the Model UN club was recognized for its outstanding delegation at a conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Two members were selected to participate in an upcoming national affairs conference. In athletics, the girls’ basketball team received accolades for their impressive ranking and undefeated status, while the boys’ basketball team celebrated a recent victory. Coach Katano was nearing a milestone of 600 career wins. Additionally, the ice hockey team was commended for a recent semifinal win, and the swim teams celebrated senior day. The winter track team set a new school record for the boys’ 4×200 relay.
In infrastructure matters, the board approved several facilities actions. A detailed overview of gymnasium contracts was provided, emphasizing the necessity of contingency funds due to potential unknown costs in renovation projects. Bids were received on January 15th, and the high school gym project was prioritized due to available funds. There were also discussions about a chiller replacement project at Saltbrook, with ongoing negotiations due to an “astronomical” change order. Plans were confirmed to issue a new bid for an air conditioning unit at Saltbrook.
The proposed school calendar for the 2027-2028 school year was presented, outlining workdays, student days, holidays, and breaks. The board discussed the handling of unused emergency days, with preferences for clarity on this issue to avoid confusion within the community. The board reached a consensus to incorporate specific language into the calendar regarding emergency days, with a revised version to be presented for approval at the next meeting.
Additional agenda items included the approval of finance items, which comprised donations from previous classes to schools. Facilities projects were confirmed with unanimous approval, and new personnel were hired, including a secretary, an ESL teacher, and an elementary art teacher, adding valuable experience to the district’s staff.
Committee reports were presented, covering curriculum, instruction, and technology, which reviewed annual goals and discussed the proposed school calendar. A teacher committee was established to evaluate and pilot a new math instructional program for grades seven and eight in the upcoming school year. The personnel management and communication committee reported on staff development and family engagement initiatives.
