Boston Licensing Board Considers Key License Changes Amid Community Support
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent virtual meeting, the Boston Licensing Board deliberated on several significant requests for changes in licensing and management across the city’s food and beverage establishments. The board took under advisement applications that included transfers of alcoholic beverage licenses, changes in management, and requests for upgrading existing licenses to accommodate community demands for diverse offerings. The board’s discussions highlighted the importance of community engagement and adherence to city regulations.
A central topic of the meeting was the application from SMG Newbury Restaurant LLC, operating as Saraphina, which sought to upgrade its existing license to an all-alcohol license. This request was driven by customer demand for craft cocktails, and the board noted the application was the first under new regulations. The restaurant, established in 2018, received no opposition from the community, with support from the Backbay Association. A representative from the Office of Neighborhood Services confirmed the positive reception, emphasizing that no community concerns had been raised. This application was particularly noteworthy as it illustrates an emerging trend in the Boston dining scene, where establishments seek to expand their offerings to meet evolving consumer preferences while maintaining compliance with city regulations.
In a similar vein, Nightlight Cafe LLC, operating as 89 Charles, also applied to upgrade its license to a restricted all-alcohol beverages license. The owner’s intent to enhance the beverage program without affecting neighborhood dynamics was supported by the board’s acknowledgment of a responsible operation. Again, no public testimony opposed the application.
The board also reviewed a request from BPM Events LLC, operating as Boston Public Market, for a change in management. The new manager, Aaron D’voria, brings extensive experience from the food and beverage industry, having managed operations at a prominent New York seafood restaurant. The board, satisfied with the presented credentials and lack of public opposition, took the application under advisement.
Additionally, the board discussed the transfer of an all-alcoholic beverages license from Sage Client 415 LLC to Kenmore Square Hotel LLC, both doing business as Hotel Commonwealth. This transfer aimed to align the license with the current property owner, with no planned operational changes. The proposal included details about the hotel’s offerings, such as banquet space and guest accommodations, and received no inquiries or objections from board members.
In another notable application, Eddie V’s Holdings LLC sought to transfer its license to Craft Food Hall Project Holdings LLC at One Post Office Square. The project, aiming to replicate successful food hall concepts, received positive feedback from the community. The proposed manager and concept have been well-received in other Massachusetts locations, promising an enhanced tenant attraction strategy.
The meeting also addressed several applications for changes in alcohol license classifications, such as those from Witchcraft LLC and Scaffo, Inc. These applications were driven by customer demand for a broader range of drink options.
