Faribault School Board Revises Administrator Ethics Policy, Rejects Amendments on Law Compliance
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Faribault School Board meeting, the board focused on reviewing and revising several policies, with attention given to the Administrator Code of Ethics. The board approved revisions that included the insertion of the Minnesota Code of Ethics for school administrators while removing a previous ethics statement. However, proposed amendments related to legal compliance and treason were rejected due to a lack of support.
A proposal to amend the policy by adding a statement emphasizing that federal law supersedes state and local laws failed to gain a second motion. Additionally, another proposed amendment sought to include a clause stipulating that school administrators must obey laws and refrain from supporting organizations advocating government overthrow. This, too, did not receive a second motion and was subsequently dismissed.
Apart from the ethics policy, the board also addressed revisions to several other policies. These included adjustments to the textbooks and instructional materials policy which now incorporates a reference to a federal statute, and changes to the video surveillance policy, which aligns language with legal recommendations by substituting “surveillance” with “recording.” The board also updated the public data and data subject requests policy to reflect recent legislative changes and confirmed it would undergo annual reviews.
