Monticello School Board Restores Chair Compensation and Focuses on Student Safety
- Meeting Overview:
In a move during the Monticello School Board meeting on February 2, 2026, members unanimously approved the restoration of the board chair’s compensation to its previous level following a two-year reduction. The decision, embedded in a broader consent agenda, was made amid discussions about the chair’s responsibilities and comparisons to compensation in neighboring districts. Concurrently, the board reviewed policies on student transportation safety, spurred by recent concerns over child supervision.
The meeting’s most significant decision revolved around board chair compensation. The chair, whose compensation had been temporarily reduced, refrained from voting due to the personal nature of the proposal. The board’s budget committee had evaluated the chair’s performance and found it comparable to that of a predecessor, justifying the restoration to the former pay level. This decision was made to address misconceptions and quell concerns from staff families who had questioned the proposal’s rationale. Board members acknowledged the extensive workload shouldered by the chair, including numerous meetings beyond the regular sessions, and expressed regret over the social media criticisms that had emerged. Despite some public disapproval, the board emphasized the importance of the chair’s role and noted that the adjustment would not elevate the chair’s pay to the highest in the region.
Following the compensation discussion, Superintendent Eric Olson presented an accepted donation of $500 from the Central Minnesota Manufacturing Association, earmarked for a high school welding class field trip. The donation, unanimously approved by the board, was praised as a valuable opportunity for students to explore career paths in manufacturing.
In addition to these fiscal matters, the board addressed student safety through a review of policy 709, which focuses on student transportation safety. This review followed an incident involving a student’s abduction after school, highlighting the urgency of ensuring child safety. The updated policy reinforces parental responsibilities under state and county law, with added measures to enhance community awareness. Contributions from elementary principals and the transportation communication coordinator were noted, alongside plans for newsletters and parent nights to further engage families in safety discussions.
The meeting also included recognition of school staff and counselors. Principal Kristen Green and others acknowledged Amy Hanik, an English language learner teacher, for her advocacy and community-building efforts among dual language learners. Anna Dominguez from Little Mountain was also praised for her dedication to multilingual learners and her impactful relationships with families. Additionally, the board celebrated National School Counselors Week, with Superintendent Olson commending counselors for their critical role in supporting students’ academic and personal challenges.
Further policy discussions involved the first reading of policy 9006, which addresses community notification of predatory offenders. Although no substantive changes were made, the policy was reorganized for clarity to aid school staff in responding to law enforcement notifications about convicted offenders moving into the district.
The board also highlighted upcoming opportunities for community engagement. Superintendent Olson announced listening sessions scheduled for February 12, intended to gather family input for the budget planning process. These sessions aim to amplify diverse voices, including those of students, to better align district priorities with community needs.
They reported on the successful completion of registration for the upcoming school year, ongoing winter spirit activities, and the anticipation of the upcoming snowball dance.
