Freehold Township School Board Celebrates Student and Staff Achievements Amid Policy Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
The Freehold Township School Board meeting was marked by the celebration of numerous student and staff achievements, including recognition of the Allshore Intermediate Band and the Barlo Middle School girls’ basketball team. In addition, the board acknowledged recipients of the Governor’s Educator of the Year and Support Staff of the Year awards. Discussions also covered the district’s fitness initiatives, harassment incidents, and various personnel matters.
The meeting commenced with an enthusiastic focus on student achievements, beginning with the Allshore Intermediate Band awards. Students from Eisenhower and Barlo Middle Schools received recognition for their inclusion in this prestigious honor band for fifth to eighth graders from Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The selection process, described by the band director, involves rigorous auditions that demand mastery of scales and sight-reading skills, akin to high-level sports tryouts. Students Megan Brooks, Henry Calder, Olivia Leone, Matthew Ukno, and Sophia Porcelli were among those honored for their musical accomplishments.
In addition to the band, the Barlo Middle School girls’ basketball team was commended for their victory in the 2025 Santa Scamper Hoop Stuffer Tournament. The coach expressed gratitude towards the board and administration for their support and highlighted the team’s dedication throughout their 21-game schedule, culminating in a championship win against St. Catherine’s with a score of 29-21. The coach praised the players for their commitment and teamwork.
Following the celebration of student accomplishments, the board shifted focus to staff recognitions. The Governor’s Educator of the Year and Support Staff of the Year awards were presented to personnel from various schools within the district. Notably, Nancy Pacetta, a speech therapist at Applegate School, was honored as Educator of the Year, and Danielle George, a sixth-grade language arts teacher from Barlo Middle School, received the same recognition, although she was unable to attend. Other awardees included Melissa Stagger and Christine Calbert from Eisenhower Middle School, and Julie Brain and Serita Gaswami from the ECLC, highlighting the diverse talents and contributions of the district’s educators and support staff.
The awards segment continued with acknowledgments for staff from other district schools, including Kina, Donovan, and Ericson Schools. Bianca Boyce and Pauline Cresbow were recognized from Kina, while Julie Cune and Donna Ruster Holtz received honors from Donovan. Rita Boringer and Annne Paresi were acknowledged from Ericson School, with additional accolades for Kim Sabbo and Hector Pachego Orripeza from West Freehold. The collaborative efforts and supportive environments within these schools were emphasized in speeches.
Amidst the celebrations, the board addressed administrative matters. An administrative report highlighted the February fitness challenge across elementary schools, which encouraged students and families to engage in daily wellness activities. The board also reviewed incidents of harassment, intimidation, and bullying, reporting a total of 30 confirmed cases across the district. The Kina School had the highest number of incidents, with five recorded cases, followed by Applegate School with two.
The board conducted a public hearing on the School Safety Data System (SSDS) report, although no public comments were made. Discussions then transitioned into personnel policies, covering resignations, retirements, and new hires. Long-serving staff member Susan Perry was recognized for her 27 years of service. Additionally, the board reviewed and voted on various agenda items related to finance, facilities, and transportation, with no objections raised.
As the meeting drew to a close, the board president reiterated congratulations to all award recipients and praised the new screen used during the session. A second opportunity for public participation was offered, but no comments were made. The board then entered an executive session to discuss personnel and legal matters, specifically a residency appeal, with no public action anticipated post-session.
