Audit Findings and Calendar Concerns Dominate Little Egg Harbor School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Little Egg Harbor School Board meeting, the financial audit results and subsequent recommendations took center stage, sparking a discussion about fiscal management and compliance issues. Auditor Mike Garcia of Ford Scott Associates presented the findings for the 2425 school year audit, which included three main areas of concern. The first recommendation stressed the importance of retaining fully signed tuition contracts for future audits. The second finding highlighted errors in calculating health benefit contributions withheld from employee salaries. The third and perhaps most issue involved the preschool education program, which had overspent by approximately $287,000. To address this shortfall, a transfer from the general fund was required. Garcia recommended limiting preschool expenditures to available state funding in future budgets to prevent similar overspending.
Garcia detailed the district’s general fund balance, which stood at $1,835,416 at the year’s end. This amount was broken down into reserves for capital improvements, maintenance, and future unemployment claims. However, the unassigned fund balance was much lower, at $392,553, notably below the state-imposed cap of 2% of expenditures. Discussion ensued regarding the decline in state aid, which had decreased by around $600,000 compared to the previous year, directly impacting the overall surplus. Garcia clarified that much of the fund balance had been allocated to various reserves and expenditures, explaining its reduction to $392,000.
The board also addressed a temporary loan of $593,955, taken to bridge funding gaps between state aid payments, which was reflected in the financial statements. Questions arose about the preschool program’s overspending, with clarifications provided about a budgetary error where carryover funds were mistakenly budgeted twice. Garcia assured the board this issue was corrected in the current budget. The audit presentation underscored the need for the district to closely monitor financial planning and compliance with state and federal regulations.
Another topic was the school calendar, particularly regarding the timing of staff and student attendance on the Friday before Labor Day. A board member raised concerns that the board had not adequately reviewed feedback from the teachers’ union on this issue. The proposed calendar’s late dismissal for preschoolers was also seen as problematic. This led to a motion to table the discussion on this calendar item until the next meeting, allowing for further review and input from parents during upcoming conferences. The motion to delay was supported and passed unanimously.
In addition to these primary discussions, the meeting featured a series of recognitions and presentations. The superintendent’s report highlighted notable achievements, including the announcement of teachers and support staff of the year. Danielle Chux, Amy Craig, and Reed McFarland were among those honored as teachers of the year from their respective schools. Educational services professionals such as Mimi Gander and Michelle Fontana were also recognized for their contributions.
The meeting also saw the acknowledgment of students excelling in character and responsibility, with recognitions at the George J. Mitchell and Frog Pond Schools. Various students were praised for their positive contributions and responsible behaviors. In line with this, the Governor’s Educator of the Year Awards were presented again to Amy Craig and Reed McFarland, honoring their dedication and impact within the school community.
Public comments concluded the meeting, with community members expressing gratitude towards educators and staff. Upcoming events like a fitness night, prom dress collection program, and fundraising initiatives such as a Chick-fil-A fundraiser were announced to support school activities. Concerns about absenteeism were also discussed, with suggestions for pizza party incentives to improve student attendance. The community engagement efforts were highlighted.
