Lonsdale City Council Plans Ambitious Founders Festival with Fireworks and Local Events
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Lonsdale City Council meeting focused on organizing the upcoming Founders Festival, emphasizing community engagement through a series of local events and fundraising efforts. The council deliberated on logistics, vendor arrangements, and sponsorships, all centered around a large-scale fireworks display scheduled for July 3rd, 2026.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the logistics of the Founders Festival, particularly in relation to the fireworks display and associated events. With a target fundraising goal of $20,000 for the fireworks, the committee reported having reached 50% of this target, thanks to contributions from local businesses and an anonymous $5,000 donation. The council expressed appreciation for the fundraising efforts, with plans to intensify outreach to approximately 250 additional potential donors.
The fireworks display is set to take place at Trishka Park, with safety and spectator accommodation being primary considerations. The council confirmed the availability of the park and discussed optimizing space for attendees. In addition to the fireworks, various activities are planned, including a potential farmers market and a band performance on Rail Street. The committee is exploring the option of blocking off portions of the street to facilitate these activities, while considering the impact on local businesses, such as the accessibility of Francon Bank’s drive-thru.
Food vendors will play a role in the festivities, with the council approving several options, contingent on compliance with the city’s food vendor application process. Among the vendors considered are Kona Ice, offering Hawaiian shaved ice, and a barbecue truck named Meet Madness. The council emphasized the importance of simple, traditional fare, like hamburgers and hot dogs, to cater to the festival’s audience. The possibility of involving local meat markets was also discussed to enhance the barbecue experience.
In addition to food and entertainment, the council considered a new idea proposed by a car club to host a “roll in” event during the fireworks display. This would involve classic cars being parked along a closed-off street, allowing spectators to enjoy both the vehicles and the fireworks. The council discussed logistical details, such as closing a lane in front of RNR for spectators to set up chairs and proposed a start time of 5:30 PM for the roll-in, allowing people to arrive after work.
The council also focused on sports activities, exploring the possibility of coordinating soccer scrimmages with local teams. While the Lonza Aces were unable to schedule a game on July 3rd, discussions continued about hosting a scrimmage with TCU soccer at Tritka. Food vendors would be present at the soccer events, requiring careful scheduling to align with other festival activities.
To further promote the festival, the council considered various marketing strategies, including utilizing a digital billboard currently under private contract. While the billboard’s use was limited, the council explored other promotional avenues, such as a wristband system for unlimited tasting at a planned cook-off event. This event would feature local vendors, with a focus on keeping participation within the Lonsdale, New Prague, and Montgomery areas.
In terms of volunteer involvement, the council discussed potential collaboration with the Lonsdale ambassadors and the parks board to enhance community participation. The ambassadors could assist with festival activities, such as organizing games for children.
The council agreed to prioritize manageable events for the immediate planning period.
