Spring Lake Park School Board Commits to Keeping Lighthouse Program at Current Location
- Meeting Overview:
The Spring Lake Park School Board meeting focused on several issues, with the most significant being the decision to maintain the Lighthouse School for Gifted and Insatiable Learners at its current location within Spring Lake Park High School. The board also discussed budget adjustments, the impact of bond refunding, and various school initiatives.
The Lighthouse program, established in 2003, serves highly gifted students across multiple grades, emphasizing inquiry-based learning tailored to individual interests. Dr. Hope Ron presented an update on the program, detailing a review of its current setup and potential future enhancements. This review included gathering feedback from 11 different groups, which identified five primary themes critical to the program’s continuation and potential relocation.
A significant concern raised was the potential disruption of the Lighthouse community’s unique multi-age, multi-grade model if relocated. The feedback underscored the importance of belonging, as many gifted students often experience challenges with exclusion in traditional settings. Additionally, programming opportunities were considered, with potential enhancements recognized should the program be relocated, but with a cautionary note that such a move could dilute its inquiry-based model and reduce access to high school courses.
Logistical challenges were another theme, as relocating the program could impose transportation difficulties for families. In response, the board decided to maintain the Lighthouse program at its current location. They also committed to exploring the possibility of offering similar programming at North Point Elementary for younger gifted learners, allowing families a choice between the two locations.
Following this discussion, the board turned to financial matters, updating the current school year’s budget and outlining the upcoming budget process. The financial presentation highlighted an increase in the general fund revenue of approximately $3.2 million, with $1.2 million classified as ongoing. This increase was attributed to stable student enrollment and additional state grants, including one for a solar project.
The recent bond refunding completed in November was also discussed, which resulted in an increase in both revenue and expenditure—approximately $40 million to $45 million. By refinancing bonds at lower interest rates, the district could reduce future levy costs for taxpayers. However, the savings from this bond refunding are passed on as reduced taxes rather than retained by the district.
The superintendent’s report provided updates from various schools within the district, highlighting educational activities and community initiatives. Noteworthy was a kindness initiative at Center View and a blanket-making project for pediatric patients at Hennepin Healthcare, organized by a student inspired by a job shadowing experience.
The superintendent also addressed legislative concerns, particularly potential reductions in special education and compensatory education funding. These reductions could impact the district significantly, with an anticipated reduction of over a million dollars in access funding if current trends continue.
The board also approved the school calendar for the 2027-2028 academic year, which will start on September 7, 2027, after Labor Day, and end on June 8, 2028. This decision was based on feedback emphasizing the importance of prioritizing student learning and effective planning. Additionally, the board approved a budget revision for the fiscal year 2026 and discussed multi-site secure entrance updates across district facilities, emphasizing improved security measures.
In community engagement, the board acknowledged donations to the district with gratitude, highlighting the significant support received from families and organizations. The meeting concluded with a discussion of upcoming events and opportunities for community involvement in school activities.
