Foley School Board Censures Member Amid Financial and Enrollment Updates
- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Foley School Board meeting, a resolution to censure board member Patrick Laduski took center stage. The board unanimously approved the censure, citing actions deemed inconsistent with school board policies that caused unnecessary concern within the community. The resolution served as a formal reprimand, redirecting focus back to educational objectives. Following the vote, the censured member offered an apology, clarifying his intent and expressing regret over any misinterpretation of his comments, particularly regarding potential violence, while reaffirming his pacifist stance.
The meeting also provided an update on the district’s enrollment and budget. Business Manager Ryan Feders highlighted a slight decrease in the total student enrollment, now at 1,803, down from the previously projected 1,812. This adjustment is crucial as state funding is largely dependent on enrollment figures. Feders presented detailed enrollment data, noting minor fluctuations across various grades. Financially, the district had received 43.2% of its general fund revenues by January 31, 2026, a slight improvement from 39% the previous year. The revenue breakdown included 44.8% from state sources, 19% from federal contributions, and 42.9% from property taxes, with overall revenue tracking appropriately despite timing variances.
On the expenditure front, total spending was at 51.7% of the adopted budget, a slight uptick from the previous year’s 50.3%. Salaries and wages accounted for 43.6% of the budget, with employee benefits at 50%. Notably, there was an increase in purchase services, up to 74% from 56.1% last year. Supplies expenditures saw a dramatic rise to 90.9%, reflecting a front-loaded purchasing pattern, while equipment spending was more balanced at 89.2%, down from 124% the previous year. Other expenditures were at 48.8%, a decrease from last year’s 59%, largely due to timing differences.
In other developments, administrators reported on various programs and challenges within the district. An administrator highlighted the success of a recent kindness retreat, receiving positive feedback from teachers regarding student behavior. Plans for an upcoming FFA week were announced, featuring activities such as an alumni breakfast and a bean bag tournament. Challenges in recruiting substitutes were discussed following a job fair that did not meet expectations despite thorough preparation.
The condition of the school’s bleachers was also addressed, with concerns about a broken sprocket and the availability of replacement parts for aging equipment. An administrator shared positive experiences from the 1A clay state festival, praising student performances. Board members extended congratulations to the junior high speech team for earning a second-place trophy at a conference and applauded the wellness committee for its initiatives promoting health and well-being.
Further into the meeting, ongoing negotiations regarding tenure and contracts were acknowledged, along with discussions about various committees such as the health and safety committee, which was seeking new members. Board members took the opportunity to commend the archery team and the one-act play group for their successful seasons and expressed gratitude towards community contributions and individuals dedicated to school activities.
