George Ator was unanimously elected as chairperson, succeeding former chair Jay Schatz, who was commended for his years of dedication. George Werner was chosen as vice-chair, and Carol York took on the newly created role of treasurer. The new chair thanked the Commission for their trust and acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, emphasizing the importance of continuing to serve the public effectively.

Following the elections, the Commission addressed a series of tree removal requests. A notable case involved a property on Washington Street, where a dead tree covered with ivy was approved for removal with a two-for-one replacement requirement. Discussion also centered on a property on New York Avenue, where the Commission recommended retaining a southern magnolia while allowing the removal of a crepe myrtle and holly, again with a two-for-one replacement stipulation.

Another discussion focused on a property on Corgi Street, where a large silver maple was causing severe plumbing issues for the homeowner. The Commission decided to allow the removal of this tree, considering the financial burden and health concerns it imposed, with the condition of planting two new trees during the upcoming growing season.

In addition to these decisions, there was a brief discussion about utilizing an unused tree pit on Decatur Street, which is currently collecting debris. The Commission expressed a desire to revisit this issue in consultation with city management, as previous restrictions from the merchants’ association might no longer apply.
