Easthampton School Committee Approves “We the People” Trip Amid Discussions on Literacy and Fund Allocation
- Meeting Overview:
The Easthampton School Committee meeting, held recently, saw the approval of a significant out-of-state field trip for the high school’s “We the People” team, along with discussions on new literacy programs and the allocation of funds from past graduating classes.
The most notable decision of the meeting was the approval of an out-of-state field trip for the East Hampton High School “We the People” team. The team is set to travel to Washington, D.C., from April 16th to April 20th, 2026, to compete in the national finals. The committee commended the team for its impressive track record, having won nine consecutive championships. A motion to approve the trip was made and seconded, with members expressing confidence that the team would share their experiences in a future meeting, maintaining the tradition followed by previous teams.
Another discussion point was the introduction of the CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) curriculum, aimed at students from pre-K through fifth grade. This curriculum emphasizes the science of reading and is designed to address equity in literacy instruction, particularly for vulnerable student populations. The program received a $350,000 grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to support its implementation. The CKLA curriculum integrates social studies and science content. The committee highlighted the importance of maintaining high expectations for all students and emphasized the role of data-driven instruction and teacher collaboration in meeting diverse student needs.
The committee also addressed the allocation of funds from graduated classes. A significant amount of $11,679.95 from the classes of 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2022 was declared forfeited, to be transferred to a student agency account for future use. In contrast, the class of 2017 had requested access to their remaining funds to donate to charitable organizations supporting youth facing challenges. The committee decided to suspend existing policy temporarily to facilitate this donation process, following a thoughtful request from the class president, Diamond.
In addition, the meeting covered several other topics. Chartwells Food Service announced a generous monetary donation of $6,955.30 to eliminate all student lunch debt accrued before Massachusetts implemented free meals for all students. This initiative was met with astonishment and gratitude from the committee members. The student representative, Jess, provided updates on fundraising efforts for the Polar Plunge event benefiting the Special Olympics, which had raised $12,000, with a goal to surpass a rival school’s total.
The meeting also covered discussions on the strategic planning for the district, with a focus on transparency and community involvement. A partnership with the Great School Partnership was highlighted as a valuable resource. The committee expressed enthusiasm for launching a caregiver survey to gather anonymous feedback from families, with the first iteration planned for late October or early November. This survey aims to address the need for broader participation and inform decisions and improvements throughout the school year.
Updates on the assistant principal hiring process at Mountain View School were shared, with the screening committee interviewing candidates. The committee emphasized the importance of community representation and thorough selection in filling this role.
The discussion on educational initiatives continued with the review of eighth-grade algebra class enrollment. The committee noted an increase in enrollment, with 40 students currently enrolled in two algebra classes, compared to previous years with smaller class sizes.
Finally, the committee discussed the need to increase the enrollment cap for virtual schools, voting to raise it from 1% to 2% to accommodate current demand. This decision acknowledged the various needs of families opting for virtual schooling, including medical conditions and extracurricular commitments.
