Maplewood Town Council Approves Key Green Acres Application for DeHart Park Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
The Maplewood Town Council meeting was highlighted by the approval of a critical Green Acres application aimed at enhancing DeHart Park. This project, set to introduce improvements such as a new playground and increased accessibility, received unanimous support during the council’s session. Discussions also covered affordable housing ordinances, local events, and community concerns about environmental and infrastructural issues.
The most notable development discussed was the approval of the Green Acres application for DeHart Park, an endeavor that involves both environmental and recreational improvements. Paul Kitner, the director of engineering and public works, presented the project’s details, emphasizing the incorporation of community feedback since April 2025. The plan includes adding over 40 trees without removing existing ones and ensuring the project avoids any negative environmental impacts, such as affecting wetlands or endangered species habitats. The proposed improvements aim to enhance the park’s usability while maintaining its historical significance as a long-standing baseball field. Kirk Danielson from VHB elaborated on the playground’s conceptual plan, which will cater to children aged 2 to 12, with distinct sections for different age groups. The design incorporates amenities like shade structures and a rain garden, with public input continuing to shape the final layout.
In addition to the park’s enhancements, the town council addressed affordable housing through the introduction of three new ordinances. These updates align with recent changes to the Fair Housing Act and Uniform Housing Affordability Controls. One ordinance mandates affordable units in new developments, while another establishes an overlay zone providing property owners with the option to develop multifamily housing. A third ordinance allows 100% affordable housing in certain redevelopment areas.
Community engagement remained a focal point, with plans for additional public meetings to discuss ongoing projects, including DeHart Park improvements and Prospect Street designs.
The meeting also addressed logistical challenges related to local elections. Voter turnout in the recent primary was low, attributed to confusion over polling locations due to an unusual election schedule. The council reminded residents to prepare for an upcoming special general election.
Adjustmentsttention was given to public transportation, with the council acknowledging New Jersey Transit CEO Chris Kori’s visit to Maplewood during a period of train service diversions. This event underscored the importance of effective commuter communication and infrastructure management.
In other business, the council discussed the future of outdoor dining, known locally as “streeteries.” The outdoor dining season, previously set from April 15th to November 15th, faced scrutiny for its impact on parking in Maplewood Village. The council reached a consensus to adjust the season to May 1st through October 15th, a decision set to be formalized in a forthcoming ordinance.
During the public comment session, residents raised various issues, including environmental concerns about beach trees on Brook Path affected by beach leaf disease. The council acknowledged the need for intervention to preserve these trees, which are important to the area’s ecology. Other residents expressed gratitude for the council’s transparency and engagement on community projects, particularly regarding affordable housing and redevelopment.
