- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hillsdale Borough Council meeting, a shared service agreement was approved with Westwood for municipal court services, potentially saving Hillsdale approximately $70,000 annually. The meeting also saw the introduction of an ordinance amending the borough code and acknowledged the contributions of departing council members Anthony DeRosa and Zoltan Horvath.
The shared service agreement with Westwood, a neighboring borough, was a notable decision reached during the meeting. The merger of the two courts’ staff is expected to result in significant savings for Hillsdale. The responsibility of ensuring compliance with all standards and providing requisite training will be taken up by Westwood. Despite one opposing vote, the resolution authorizing the shared agreement was passed.
The meeting also witnessed the introduction of an ordinance aimed at amending and supplementing the borough code. This development followed Mayor John Ruocco’s veto of a similar ordinance during the previous council meeting. While the mayor abstained from voting, the introduction of the ordinance was approved by the council, indicating a willingness to address related matters in the upcoming meetings.
A significant portion of the council meeting was dedicated to acknowledging the contributions of outgoing council members. Having served the council for nine years, Anthony DeRosa was recognized for his focus on enhancing recreational assets and ambulance services. Zoltan Horvath, after 8.5 years of service, was applauded for his photography contributions and his passion for the improvement of the local train station. Mayor Ruocco expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Hillsdale and confirmed his continued role as a council member for the next three years. Councilman John Escobar highlighted the challenges and rewards of his decade-long tenure, emphasizing achievements in public safety, trash collection, town events, and investments in recreational fields and facilities. He expressed a desire for tangible results for the taxes paid by residents.
Other updates during the meeting included a report from the borough engineer highlighting the extensive paving work completed over the year and progress on the Centennial Field and Beachwood nature trail projects. The council also deliberated on a resolution supporting the delay of affordable housing obligations.
