Dunstable Board of Selectmen Releases $25,000 in Overlay Surplus to Tackle Budget Deficit
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Dunstable Board of Selectmen decided to release $25,000 from the fiscal year 2026 overlay account to help address a $43,000 deficit in the fiscal year 2027 budget. This move is intended to ease the financial burden on taxpayers amid ongoing attempts to balance the budget without resorting to an override.
The board’s discussion highlighted the importance of using available resources to manage the budget shortfall effectively. Despite the consistent level of abatement requests, the board was reassured by the assessor’s input that the overlay balance could accommodate these needs. The release of these funds is seen as a necessary measure in a challenging financial landscape.
Additionally, the board appointed Robert Laga to the Master Plan Implementation Committee. Laga’s previous interest in the Capital Plan Committee was noted, but his willingness to contribute to the Master Plan was welcomed.
The meeting also saw the approval of an updated Open Space and Recreation Plan. The plan, now in its final draft, includes minor updates and aims to serve as a living document for the conservation commission.
Furthermore, the board appointed a new labor council, opting to continue working with their current attorney who has transitioned to a new firm. This decision was based on the attorney’s proven track record and the firm’s expertise in labor law.
The board also established an evaluation committee for the town center trail loop project proposals. With significant interest shown in the project, the committee will review non-price proposals to advance the project’s feasibility and design.
