New Ulm City Council Approves Infrastructure Projects with Federal and FEMA Support
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm City Council approved plans for several significant infrastructure projects, including the construction of the airport’s crosswind runway and a storm sewer lift station, secured with substantial federal and FEMA funding. Additionally, the council set bid dates for 2026 utility street improvements and discussed the replacement of the Johnson Park scoreboard through a generous local donation.
The council gave the green light to the construction of the crosswind runway 927 at the New Ulm Airport, funded by a $2.5 million allocation through congressionally directed spending. The project, which involves creating an aggregate turf runway, is set to receive bids with an opening date scheduled for March 24, 2026. This development aligns with the airport’s layout plan and is expected to enhance the airport’s operational capacity.
In another infrastructure initiative, the council awarded a contract for the 18th South Street Storm Sewer Lift Station project to Holtmeer Construction, whose bid of $1.3 million was 13% lower than the engineer’s estimate. The project will be partially funded by FEMA’s pre-disaster mitigation funding, covering 75% of the costs. This project aims to bolster the city’s flood mitigation efforts.
The council also set the bid date for the 2026 utility street and alley improvement project, with plans and specifications approved and bids to be opened on March 18, 2026. This step marks the beginning of a series of infrastructure enhancements aimed at maintaining and upgrading the city’s essential services.
Amid the infrastructure discussions, the council reviewed a proposal from the New Ulm Baseball Association to donate a new digital scoreboard for Johnson Park. The scoreboard, costing approximately $259,553, will be funded entirely by the association, with no financial burden on the city. The existing scoreboard has experienced significant dimming issues, prompting the need for replacement to maintain visibility during games.
Additionally, the council addressed routine items such as accepting donations for park and recreation programs and the fire department, alongside approving temporary camping arrangements for a BMX state qualifying race in June. These agenda items reflect the council’s ongoing efforts to support community initiatives and recreational activities.
