- Meeting Overview:
The Hoboken School Board convened recently to celebrate the achievements of its students, discuss school initiatives, and report on completed audits. The meeting spotlighted the outstanding students from Joseph F. Brandt School, Connors School, Wallace School, Hoboken Middle School, and Hoboken High School. Superintendent Christine Johnson also announced upcoming programs including a career ecosystem lab, a dual enrollment partnership with NJIT, and a language immersion program in Costa Rica.
The meeting began by recognizing Amila Gillard, a second-grade student from Wallace School. Miss Gario, who nominated Amila, praised her motivation, focus, and excellent behavior. Amila, who enjoys gymnastics, soccer, and math, aspires to be a veterinarian. Other students, including Isaac Simmons, CA Patel, Liba Newfield, and Daniel Brin, were also acknowledged for their commendable academic and extracurricular performance.
Superintendent Johnson then provided updates on the district’s recent activities and forthcoming initiatives. The announcement of a new career ecosystem lab for Hoboken High School, a partnership with NJIT for architectural courses, and a language immersion program in Costa Rica were among the noteworthy developments. Johnson also emphasized the district’s commitment to enhancing literacy and math achievement and their ongoing collaborations with St. Mary’s Advocates and Stevens Institute of Technology.
The business side of the meeting saw the business administrator report on a completed audit, which yielded no findings or recommendations, and the upcoming budget season. The finance committee acknowledged donations from St. Mary’s Advocates and Primate Fitness, while the curriculum committee highlighted sponsored field trips to various museums and the success of the Winter Arts Festival.
Board member Alex De La Torre reported on the wellness committee’s meeting, announcing plans for 10 open swim sessions at Hoboken High School from January through March 2024. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to coordinate a meeting with the mayor and city officials regarding the 770 pilot payment and the board’s work on setting board goals.
The meeting concluded on a bittersweet note as it marked the last for Melanie Deon, who was recognized by her colleagues for her six years of service. Amid the formalities, Patricia Waiters voiced concerns during the public comments section about the School Board election certification and allegations against her campaign.
