Boston Licensing Board Addresses Fire Safety Violations and Approves License Transfers
- Meeting Overview:
In a Boston Licensing Board meeting, members addressed issues, including fire safety violations at a local establishment, numerous license transfers, and changes to operational aspects for businesses across the city. One establishment faced disciplinary action for life safety violations, while others received approvals for various licensing requests.
The most pressing topic involved Anchovies Acquisition Limited Partnership, doing business as Anchovies on Columbus Avenue, which was cited for blocking a fire exit and overcrowding, with police reports indicating the venue exceeded its capacity. The board determined that these issues were violations and emphasized their seriousness due to the potential risk to life safety. Consequently, the board issued a second warning to the establishment for the blocked fire exit, noting previous similar charges. For the overcrowding infraction, a one-day suspension was decided upon, to be held in abeyance for six months.
Another noteworthy discussion centered on Tand Corporation, operating as Old Harbor Market, which sought to change its license classification to a retail package store for all alcoholic beverages. Concerns about the saturation of liquor licenses in South Boston were initially raised. However, after considering the considerable support for the change, the board voted unanimously to approve the application. This decision highlights the board’s responsiveness to community opinions while balancing regulatory considerations.
During the meeting, several establishments sought approval for license transfers. Elasti Corp., doing business as Napper Tandies, requested to transfer its license to LH Roslandale LLC, operating as Laosienda, at the same location. The board approved the transfer, including changes to the building’s layout and operational hours. Similarly, 550 Tremont LLC, trading as BNG Oysters Limited, applied to transfer its license to Clarendon Square Hospitality LLC while maintaining the same location. This application included plans for a year-round outdoor patio accommodating 22 patrons and was approved, pending further consideration once a new tenant and manager of record are identified.
CRG License Holdings 2 LLC’s application to transfer its license to Chillin Union Street LLC, doing business as Tiki Rock, was also approved. This included the addition of a seasonal outdoor patio and the appointment of a new manager of record. Timeout Market Boston LLC sought to transfer its license to Fenway Food Hall LLC while operating at the same address, with the board approving the transfer. However, the establishment will return for further action once new management is in place.
The board deferred a vote on Dolce Fumo Restaurant Group Corp.’s petition to transfer its license and location to Little Black Dress LLC, as a board member expressed hesitation and cited a lack of readiness to proceed.
In terms of license upgrades, Siraj Corporation, operating as El Centro in Roxbury, applied for a common victualer license for malt beverages and concurrently sought an upgrade to a restricted all-alcoholic beverages license. The board unanimously approved both requests, aligning with a trend of approvals for similar upgrades sought by other establishments.
The meeting also addressed non-hearing transactions, approving new Kovi licenses for various businesses, including Yemen Coffee Lab LLC, Banchan and Co., HP Pizza Shop LLC, Gyro Theory LLC, Lord Hobo Dry Do LLC, and Third Sector New England. Additionally, changes to existing common victualer licenses were approved for Asharton Cafe and Trillium, allowing changes in management personnel.
Several one-day amendments to existing licenses were approved, enabling the South Boston Lithuanian Citizens Association to open earlier for special events and extending an outdoor patio event for LCTV Fort Point LLC. These approvals demonstrate the board’s support for community events and flexibility in accommodating special requests.
